Okay, I'm just going to say this... I'm starting to do textures, but other than that, I'm an end user. I highly doubt that I will ever be much of a content creator besides the textures. I primarily create covers for indie books, and I need lots of free content.
Let's enter "free genesis daz content" into Google.
(hm... hm... type type type)
There doesn't seem to be almost anything here. Okay, let's try ShareCG...
(typety type)
Three pages. And I don't see anything for Gen2 yet.
Now, let's entire in "free v4 content)
(jumps back to avoid virtual flood)
!!! There's a lot out there, let's just say.
On ShareCG...
102 pages.
Yep, one hundred and two versus three.
Now, when did Genesis 1 first come out?
(researchy research)
Okay, I need to keep watching a roast in the oven, so I can't find the exact date. But I found refs to it in May 2011.
It's an Emperor's New Clothes kind of thing, IMHO. Two full years, and there's very little Genesis content that's free out there with a simple casual search. Unbelievable loads of stuff for V4 (and M4, too.)
Guess what a lot of end users are thinking..."Wow, the economy's bad. I want things that are free! Yay! Look at everything for V4!"
Now, I'm a research kind of person, and one thing I've been trying to find for awhile is any actual sales figure for Genesis. I can't find one scrap of information anywhere. I haven't seen anyone else come up with actual, solid facts and figures, and I have looked. That says something to me. There is no transparency, and maybe there's a reason.
So I don't know the whole story, and I don't know if anybody else does either. But this is a bunch of facts that can be put together. And coming out with a new second-gen figure, complete with lots of stuff that will need to be bought and not immediately compatible with the old free stuff without fiddling around, does not seem like a smart business decision to me. A lot of people have already been antagonized by the whole thing. So between the two, I would bet on Dawn being far more successful.
ETA:
SmithMicro is on NASDAQ, and Daz is not, being a privately held company. Now, there are a lot of reasons why a company might not have gone public, but it means that they aren't required to release financial statements. I've been an investor for a long time (a small one...), and I am very leery of private companies. There's usually a good reason why they haven't made stock available as a public offering. This may be good, bad or neutral... but one day, people may look back on this and... okay. I'm not going to say anything else. Just an FYI...

Hi, all... (waves)
(sits at feet of the great, who are here. I am but a humble learner...)
WOW! I look forward to this release so much, and I plan to start learning all about her from the very beginning. SO much to learn.

(looks around)
Oh, what a dumb question this is.
(furtively starts typing)
Something extremely obvious must have gone wrong here...
(Are y'all SURE you're prepared for just how dumb this question is? Okay...)
So M4 is now in the library in his very own folder. When downloading everything, I made sure the morphs were in the same folder as both the character and a dummy poser.exe file. The problem is, um, that he doesn't seem to be getting along too well with the clothes. It's either HIM or whatever item of clothing is in question. When it shows up (let's say a pair of jeans,) he mysteriously vanishes. If there's another character in the scene (let's say V4), then any attempt to move him around only moves her.
PLEASE help out with some muchly appreciated advice here...

Hi all... (waves)
This is a great thread-- I've saved answers to separate word docs for each topic, and I'll be going over them. :)
I used Poser much more several years ago; for a variety of reasons, I never ended up going very far with it, and I want to make up for it now!! So, beause there's such a range of tuts out there... would people recommend that paid series? In a lot of ways, I'd rather just have one series of tuts I'd have to pay for that I know will be useful than chase down zillions of free tuts that might or might not be any good. It's been discussed on this thread. How recent is it? The link is here:
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/poser-beginner-to-advanced/95392
I also have a lot of questions about the sad, sad state of my libraries... but that will wait until I get a chance to go over all of the lib notes from here.
Thread: How can Poser and Daz share downloaded files? | Forum: DAZ|Studio
To be honest, I think I've had it. The Smith Micro documentation is terrible in this area-- they give absolutely no clue that this is what you're supposed to do, and the directions say to do exactly what I did. A nervous breakdown would not be good. I'd like to just install everything directly in Daz. I only ended up getting about a fifth of the way through the content anyway. Do I have to first uninstall it where it is now?
(Thanks again for your infinite patience!!)

I WILL figure this out eventually!!!
In the meantime, here's what's going on:
In Poser Formats-- Poser 2010- 9 library items, each one is empty.
In Poser Formats-- My Library, only 2 folders show up: figures and poses. Figures only has the V4 clothing, and poses only has materials and a bodysuit. Everything else that was installed does show up in the Vicky folder in Poser's runtime folder.

Sorry for the double post, but I think I went over the editing time...
entering the original folder (Vicky 4.2) produced the message that the path was already added. But I still don't know how to get the content to show up in Daz.
Thread: How to "set up library correctly" so that Daz 4.5 can import Poser 2010 figures? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Well, that's exactly what I'm having problems with... here's the question I have going right now in another forum.
Me:
I'm downloading all of the files for Vicky 4.2 pro pack. Per SmithMicro's page of instructions on the subject, they're all going in the "Vicky 4.2" folder I created inside the Poser runtime library. I also marked them as running in Poser each time (again, that's what SM said to do.) They all show up in Poser 2010, yay. BUT... the big question is, how do I also get them to show up and be usable in Daz (4.5)? Do I need to somehow link to that Poser folder within Daz? Do I need to download it all again into a Daz location, too? (I'll do it if I have to...) Somebody must have done this before, and I'm sure it's answered somewhere, but I really couldn't find it. All help much appreciated. :)
AlanaDale:Just make that runtime known to DS
Press F2, go to Content Library --> Content Directory Manager
and add to Poser formats (just the top level, the one above "runtime" in Poser)
Me:
I'm probably NOT doing this the right way... but I added the Poser folder that was top level. (Programs-- Smith Micro-- Poser 2010.) Is that the right way to do it when everything is in the Vicky 4.2 folder I created in Runtime, though? I closed and restarted Daz, but I couldn't get anything to show up under actors, wardrobe, and props. Does it work anything like Poser (where it would show up in a different library folder at the top level?)
(there's probably a better way to quote all that)
So maybe the underlying problem is that I can't seem to find or identify the right content folder??

Never mind. Figured it out, although it still seems more complicated than it needs to be! I really appreciated your reply, though. :)
Thread: poser to vue | Forum: Vue
Quote - So far I haven't encountered any problem opening poser files in Vue at all, but you need to set things up right as others have stated before. You need to point Vue to where poser is and in the beginning I had lot's of problems..... until I realised that Vue and the way I set up Poser Pro 2012 64bit in Windows 7 don't work well together at all. So I installed Poser Pro 2012 32bit in the default c:program files(x86)/and so on and all the problems went away. My runtimes are a mess and I've got lots of them and Vue doesn't have a problem finding anything at all. If poser can find it, so can vue. I've been doing lot's of vue scenes that use (multiple figure) poser scenes and so far no problem at all. I'm mixing figures like M3, M4, G2 and props and clothing from all kinds of different runtimes in one scene and no problems at all.
I love how when you change something in your original poser scene, vue asks if you want to update.
Your trees, flowers, birds and whatever will work fine in Vue, but as for trees and flowers I'm not sure if you want to use them  some of the Vue stuff is so cool.
By the way......... are you sure you need complete? What are you going to do with it? I'm using Studio and I don't even use half of the stuff it offers. The only thing I bought extra with studio is the ecopainter, that is well worth the money.
VueSkin..... hang on I'll post 2 images in a minute I've been working on this week.
Please... PLEASE!!! help me understand how you got Vue to recognize where Poser is. I've tried pointing it to all different kinds of paths. (64bit, 86) and it just keeps refusing to find it. I can't believe that the PLE edition wouldn't do this when it SAYS that it will. I am at the end of my rope with this-- ALL help appreciated. (Sorry about the intermittent capslock...)
