translate: change position in x y or z. Move left or right, etc. Not rotation or scale. I can see "translate" could be a confusing word if you're already translating languages. Good Luck, Mazey! don

Mazey, I really want to answer your question. I Really do. To start with, I hope I understand your question/predicament and hope you're not just pulling my virtual leg. The kernal idea of the tutorial is to establish a background, mid-ground and fore-ground and therefore give the eye some clues as to the size of the space. Depending on how you place them you're directing the eye around the picture. When multi-replicating an object, as he did, the distance between objects will be constant. As you move the camara around that line will taper or flatten in perspective automatically (thanks to the programmer). Those lines drawn by the tutor were just examples of eye focus and aren't part of the program, nor are they neccesary to go about your designing, imho. I hope I have understood your question and given you feedback that will be useful beyond your need to laugh. deci6el
Thread: looking for the newbie section... | Forum: Bryce
The fire: One of your fire boxes looks like its getting the wrong texture. The flat brightness of the flames that are there could be from lighting. Make sure the specular is turned off. Fire is a light and so isn't affected by light. A physics expert would probably disagree with me on this point but we're just talking about pictures here. also make sure your fire does not cast a shadow. All imported poser materials seem to come in with way too much ambience as well. One more mystery re: Poser mtl > Bryce In poser, you'll notice that often the character's material will be set to a color. This helps make the character look reasonably human even before textures are applied ie; not like a white statue. When you add a texture to that poser model the color of the texture get multiplied by the color of the object. If the lips material is red and you add a red texture on top of it you will get saturated red lips. Red x Red In bryce, it seems that it will come in with that material color (red) but will be replaced by the texture color once the texture is added. That's why your characters might look a little washed out compared to what they looked like in Poser. This is all my own observation and is not a company condoned explanation of anything that takes place in either program. Believe at your own risk. Oh, and yes, it will fall apart. good luck, Cheryle, and you don't need a newbie section. :)
Thread: (WIP) Alien Invasion, Opinions please | Forum: Bryce
My only comment would be about lighting. You've obviously invested some time in creating some nice moody lighting for your scene but your characters are lost in space. They need to be grounded with some cast shadows to give them some weight. The amorphous red and green goo ground plane, is it set to recieve shadows? Also you might want to check your sky settings. Are shadows turned on? If your happy with your lighting and don't want your characters to have shadows all over the floor then please feel free to ignore these comments.

I like the tension setup between the osian and the mushroom pixies. He could be friendly but the lead mushroom has that tenuous en garde stance. How long did this take to render? You've got quite a few trees there.

Adding to Amixiam's(Bryan) reply, lower the ambient settings. Lighting can really make/break a good concept. You have a good light source coming in from the window, throwing some nice shadows in the room but with so much ambience the picture loses focus. What do you want us to look at? What story/statement do you want to make with your picture? I know they seem like the same old artsy-fartsy questions but its a good way of telling yourself what you need to do next. For example, your floor texture seems to overwhelm the picture (to me). The chair texture is too large and too strong but as an element adds a sense of mystery or danger that we just missed. Remembering that all this is just my opinion and that you could do all these things for some picture to make a certain statement (Rule #1: No Rules). The major distinction being to do them on purpose. Include the camera in that as well. If the cigarette left burning in the room is important then I would feature it better with a closer camera angle. Good luck and thanks for inviting my two cents. :)

Ditto Stuie. The columns being the feature here I would think the opportunity would be to texture them with something that the eye would want to linger over. If you're into painting, some interesting or funny hieroglyphics could be good. Something that might indicate in Ancient Egyption: "This way to the Arc of the Covenant and don't forget to visit our Snack Bar" or possibly something else that you wouldn't consider lame. Columns aside, you could have somebody or something coming out of the temple; a mummy, Indiana Jones being chased by 5 million scarabs! How many ray hits would that create?

No picture with your post that might give me the extra clues as to what could be happening but here goes: The figure, is it a poser fig. or something you made up? If poser, each char. has a pre-existing uv mapped jpg. Bring that in to your Bryce library and set the map type to parametric. Adjust ambient, diffuse, specular to taste. If not how was your tex map created, and what type of map space are you currently using in Bryce; world, object?

Sure, it would be easy to pick at some items and tell you how "I would have done it different". Instead, I say, "Make a bunch more and post 'em 'cause I love looking at 'em. P-51, cadellac of the sky! Hey, look at that! I have no idea how to spell cadallac. Who knew? Anyway, great work, I hope you do more with this subject. Keep 'em Flyin'

Thanks, all, for your comments. A few iterations back they were walking through the warp effect so there was more of an individual time gate for each age but it obscured their faces. As for the motion blur, I was trying to go light on the paint work and keep it mostly Bryce. The final picture wasn't so close to what I had first pictured but I guess that shouldn't be a surprise by now. Bump in the Night! Yes, sounds like more fun.

Apache2k, gets my vote. I liked the pulp magazine cover quality it had. I'll just hope Apache2k agrees that description is a good thing to be compared to. Great entries all and hope I can be on time for the next one.

Very Nice! Great work on a very desirable item, imo. Was about to suggest "a little too bulbous on the legs" but then I checked the link above for reference. So much for MY memory. That scene was a real standout, the tank ultra-cool and you have captured it faithfully. All of that said, what do you think? Should the legs be more mechanical and less organic? This is gonna texture-up real good!

Live Action Animation? Do you mean that your Poser Guy is not a still but animating or do you mean that he's going to be comped over captured film or video? And what did you mean by "onto your poser figures"? I ask because it will make a difference to my answer. But here's my guess. If you have the comping software like After Effects you can take the matte channel of your character and lay it down, skew it and fill it with black, soften it. But there are a lot of hassles that come with that. But it would be one way of doing what I think you want to do. I hope that helps in some way.
