Thanks for the great suggestions. Several artists ask about bump maps. Believe it or not there are bump maps on every single object in the pic. With a size reduction to 800 x 600, a little detail was lost. Here is a link to the 1024 x 768 version in the gallery (I think it makes a good desktop pic). I think the textures on the plywood look pretty much like the surface of rough unfinished plywood, at least the way I remember it, but my memory isn't as accurate as it used to be, so... There is a Brycean 5 dof blur, a subtle one, perhaps, but look at the back, and you can see the blur. Maybe this is also feeding the comments about blurriness of some textures. Well, a very wise person known only as "hewsan" once told me, "all work is a work in progress till you tire of it." Truer words were never written. But there's a good chance I'll return to this image to tweak on it some more, I do that a lot. And I'm saving this thread so that when I do I'll have some good suggestions for improvement. Thanks all! Oh, I almost forgot about Eyebis (the Gremlin). I'm glad so many people like him (it?). I've been drawing Eyebis since grammar school (you see, I've always been like this). His first 3D incarnation was on the Amiga with a program called Imagine. The latest one is 100% Bryce5 with metaballs, spheres and cones. I like him so much I use him as a sort of mascot on my thumbnails in the gallery. This is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.

Dents are a good idea, Lin. Assuming hewsan made the armor in a program other than Bryce, maybe he can alter the mesh to create realistic dents. Excellent job on the armor and textures, BTW.

Lin: I see what you mean, but the nail is only messed up in the "gag" version, not the "real" one. This is weirding me out, because I "plop" rendered the Eyebis into the pic, I didn't rerender the left side of this pic at all (hums Twilight Zone theme).

Just put up a new version of this pic in the forum. I had carefully placed the first nail in the Front view so it was sitting against the floor with the rim of the head and the rim of the point flush against the floor. Then I duplicated and moved the copies with the Edit Icons so none of them changed position relative to the floor. Ditto on the hammer, as well. Perhaps it is the double shadow causing it. I've posted a new version with only one shadow of this pic if you're interested.

Oh, and I turned the shadows off for the left hand light.

Infinity's Child was a sequel to Planetary Traveler (also made with Bryce), which I think was even better. It's worth tracking down.

I think the Latin could also be "Pro tuum" pro meaning for. Latin I and II were a long time ago.

Thread: What do you do whilst you're rendering? | Forum: Bryce
I've done most of the things mentioned, but sometimes just stare stupidly at the screen while it's rendering one line at a time. Actually, that has a relaxing, meditative, sort of zen quality to it. :^)

400 soft shadow lights in a dome-shaped array. I think rayraz says it took 6.5 days to render. Does look very real.

Great model! Do you use Rhino for modeling? I have got to get a dedicated modeling program. There are some great free models out there, but I always wish that I could make the models I see in my mind's eye. Great pic!

Sorry, I feel like I'm picking on you, but just one more suggestion. Have you created any 2D picture objects in Bryce before? The picture of your daughter might benefit from being placed in the scene in this manner, as it would reflect naturally in the water, making the piece look more realistic. Don't rework the pic on my account, it's very good as is.

I like this very much, but a couple questions. 1. The picnic table appears to be in front of all the trees even though you can see (relatively) about 2 or 3 feet of the bottom of the trees behind it. Could it be hovering, not seated on the land? 2. I don't see any cast shadows anywhere. Are they turned off in the Sky Lab? Or is the "cloud casting shadows" turned on in the Sky Lab? This is giving an overcast look to the scene. I think it might benefit from some obvious cast shadows, making it look more sunny, appropriate to the setting of this pic. Again, great composition, very nice mood. -Tjohn
