Thread: PC performance, more memory? better graphics card? | Forum: Photography
Quote - 1- Start -> Run -> type "msconfig" -> go to "Startup" tab, and uncheck all things you absolutely know that you don't need to startup when your windows starts. In doubt, leave it there (although it can be re-checked if you lack a functionality in some other software). Then, restart and open your software directly (poser, daz, carrara, bryce...) and 50% of the crashes are resolved.
Thans for that, I totally forgot how to do it and am so happy I won't have every program on my PC opening at startup now!!!

First thing I'd say is look at how your memory is allocated per program and which programs take priority when they are open.
Your specs look pretty good to me, I would suggest upgrading your graphics card to some thing that has a min of 385MB of memory, 128 used to be standard, but we all know what the computer world is like...
The first thing I did was 'reallocate' my memory and PS CS2 seems to be fine now.
Also it helps to close and reopen the program after editing about 20/30 photos as this clears the RAM and virtual mem of the PS 'stored' stuff. Plus I find rebooting my system at least every 3 days goes a long way to winning the battle.
I don't know what you're free space is like but it might be something as simple as having all of your pics stored on a External HDD and run PS on your internal HDD - hence more virtual memory. I read that in Pro Photographer mag, so I did it and it def helps as well...
My 2p that's probably only worth 1p...

I also never had my HDD connected when I'm connected to the internet.
Fire and water are physical threats. But personally I feel viruses are the REAL threat.
DVD-RW I use these as I review my collection and delete stuff and if I really don't want it again I can reformat my DVD-RW's instead of throw away my DVD-R's and start again...

Thread: Canon18-55 Kit Lens | Forum: Photography
More than £10 is too much for that lens!
Seriously before you sell it off I would find it's sweet spot and maybe use it a few times at the sweet spot then think of selling it.
I'm not selling mine - number 1. I don't feel right selling a piece of 'shyt' and being hishonest about the lens quality, I feel if I don't like the quality why 'recommend' it to someone else. Number 2 - although I probably won't use my kit lens for a LONG LONG time I 'm sure one day I will, and put of that will be using it on a film back as a creative lens...
Overall I just don't feel it's morally right to pass something on that I'm not happy with. If it wasa great lens and I'd had years or joy out of it, sure I wouldn't mind selling it. But personally I wouldn't even feel right giving it away for free...

Thread: Your Genre..do you have one? I do not. Yes, many threads have covered this. | Forum: Photography
YIp that's it - so that means - nope I don't have a genre.
I like to think I'm into the cityscape thing and abstracts.
But honestly of late most of my gallery is in the 'alternative' genre - if I had to go by that...

Thread: Some thoughts about backups | Forum: Photography
Honestly I hadn't done it for ages and then when I started my tube probject I realised just how long it had been so it's now done (week ago).
I have got a 320GB EHDD - I've got EVERYTHING on there, all my programs, photos, music, everything. Google handles my emails (thank goodness).
Back home (SA) I will start putting my photos onto DVD-RW's again. Those I keep at my mom's as you should always have something off site. If anything you should have 3 backup copies for stuff. One at home, one at work and one at someone's you trust. Plus have password protection on them.
Heaven know I'm sure the government departments that just lost 28 million peoples personal details here in the UK wish they'd done that...
Well that's my 2 pence...
