Quote - This is sort of on and off topic. Since we're dealing with reality and luxrender; lighting seems to always be the key. I've looked all over for various light temperatures and have not found anything concise on it. Recently I acquired a book on nude and portrait photography by Helmut Newton(long time playboy photo) and he gave a list he uses as light temperatures for his work. For natural light they are as follows:
Sunrise, sunset 3200 K
High noon 5000–5400 K
Open sky 5500–6500 K
Overcast sky 6000–7500 K
Open shade 7000–8000 K
Partly cloudy sky 8000–10,000 K
Blue sky 9000–12,000 KAnd temps for his most commonly used artificial light temps:
Match 1700–1800 K
Candle 1850–1930 K
Household bulbs 2500–2900 K
Quartz/Halogen bulbs 2800–3400 K
Hope this is able to help someone. I'm going to be experimenting a bit more to see what kind of effects I can achieve.

Quote - If you consider this "experiment" positive I would love to try it again at some point. I will work the kinks out and provide an easier to use model. Maybe we can do this in January, if you are interested.
Thanks again for all the great renders.
Thank you Paolo! ...and yes, always up for a challange, look forward to more!

thanks RFreise and 59burst... I must admit I did not spend much time on the rat, I simply had the eyes set to glass, the teeth to glossy, and the body set to a dark velvet... I could have looked at fur textures, but as it was I got side tracked by the books! Its a fair comment tho... I also think that the modelling of the rat looked a bit cartoonish, certainly a bit strange for a real rat with the size of the teeth and the feet! `¬) - maybe a bit of further playing I may have come up with something... perhaps I'll look at adding a rat to my next scene? ;)

OK, I had a slight issue with my slave drive crashing after 257 hours, so I had to start again from scratch. (I was not happy to say the least...) I am doing no more on this.
Final full size render after another 375 hours to 15k56s/p. bloom and vignetting in render, and some chromatic abberation added as described in the comment here... http://fav.me/d5lh15d (Lux seems to do Lateral Aberration only - i.e. gives no effect centrally, but increases towards the edge)
I then noticed that there was still one part that had gone black, but hopefully it is not too obvious... And set the tube rack to glass, as could not dform properly the last download...
I did add one of John's candles, hopefully that counts as adding a light rather than an object? ...and one flash of scaled down lightning to the plasma globe. All links to the lightning, John's candles etc in the linked description above.
Time to start something else I think...

Quote - I know Jason Statham :) He was primarily a driver in the Transporter series, and a general ass kicker in other movies LOL.
Not just a DRiver, but was actually a Diver on the British National Diving Team and finished 12th in the World Championships in 1992... `¬)
Some nice renders going on, must try and catch up again...!

Quote - Thank you for the answer, Reggie68.
I now have a new problem. This has never happened before. I'm trying to render a scene and lux crashed and froze my machine. I restarted and then did a cold boot. I tried to render again, this time taking a lot of the things out of the scene. Nothing ever shows up in the render screen, it's just black. My efficiency is only at 17%, I'm usually at 800 to high 900's. I tried again, this time at 50% output. Again, nothing. I shut everything down again and reopened Daz and reloaded the scene. This time at 50% it started to render. I terminated the render, set the output to 100% and...again I got nothing but black. I've turned the settings up to 1000 and 1/4. The efficiency stays down at 17%. Not hing seems to effect it, nothing ever shows in the render screen. I am running Lux .9 I think.
Any ideas what is wrong? Did I accidentally change something that would cause things to behave this way? If so, what could it be? Should I start using the current stable build? It's 1.0 if I remember correctly. I've tried for several hours now and can't get this scene to render. I created a new scene with just a naked genesis figure in it and it rendered just fine. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
try having task manager open before you send it to lux to render and watch to see how much memory it is trying to use.. if it uses all your memory and then starts using the hard disk swap file it will slow to a crawl...

Quote - On A Promise
In British English, "on a promise" simply means that you have arranged to or at least expect to have an intimate encounter with someone - usually your regular partner.
I can never understand why, when your date said to pick her up at a specific time, you have to wait another half an hour before she is ready.
...nice one doc! worth the wait `¬)

I did try the water conversion first, actually ;--) Whatever happened, my ocean lost all its shape with the ripple setting. Now that I've got another test scene set up and hybrid mode working, I'll have another go on a simple test and see what happens!
Ah! sounds like the exploding objects when subdivided! I understand now! Might work with ripple set to 0 and sub div set to zero, but yes, I've seen objects dissapear when some sort of subdivision is applied, and I gues that may be what happens if the ripple is set to greater than 0? ...oh well! `¬)

Quote - Krazyhorse, really nice render. Very interesting.
Mbin, your lab is looking super good. You're achieved a very nice atmosphere, it reminds me of an Indiana Jones sort of thing.
Thanks Xandi, hopefully I have a final render going now... still things I could tweak, but with the limitations of the mesh and material issues, it's about as far as I can get without the objects being seperate objects... `¬) ...at least that's my excuse!

...I must say that I don't think I'd paddle there, looks very dark and mysterious - as if something is lurking just below the surface! `¬)
Yes, still playing the mad scientist... I removed the fog I was playing with, as although it did add a nice haze, it detracted from the crispness of the items as well as slowing the render by a factor of two! So found an excuse to add a candle light (one of John's)... just playing with getting the right balance between reflection and transmission colour after having set the candle to matte translucent... gives a very realistic look to the light glow through the wax! `¬)

This is last nights overnight test run. (It includes the 'lightning' that superboom pointed to in an earlier post; it seems to work very well in this scene! - so thanks for that superboom! `¬)) it is free from runtime dna http://www.runtimedna.com/RDNA-Atmospherics-Lightning-Vol-1.html
I have now extended the environment image so that the appearance in the glass reflections are correct, and have added the lightning to the the globe. I have also converted the tube stand to glass, as in this new scene (where the tube rack and globe intersection was corrected) the tube rack will not Dform easily due to the increased mesh density... (still a little noisy, but not worried about that at the moment)
I am now test running a little added 'atmosphere' if you know what I mean! - although there are still some textures to finish as well...
