you need to mask it with an "alpha channel" or export a "path". you can also save as a ".gif" and select transparency (white matte)... there is also the ".png" option, this format also supports "transparency".
as for using the crop tool to eliminate the white background, you can get as close to the circle as the square will allow but you'll still have the "corners" to deal with.
what do you want to use it for??
is it for web?
do you just want the white gone so the underlaying layer is seen in the same Photoshop file??
let me know so we can give you a better "less-vague" answer ;)

many features are based on the "image mode" as well... ...one other thing to peek at. also in lu of "re"installing PS, try tossing your "pref" file first (you can do a search on the forum to get the "keystroke shortcut") as whenever PS gets all wonky, deleating the preference file set everything back to normal... ... just a few other suggestions, hope it helps, :) retrocity

Hey TobinLam, one thing i do is to use ImageReady (PS's "sister app") to make my thumbs. i just click on the small icon at the bottom of PS's toolbar and "jump-to" ImageReady. the active file is then open and ready to go. IR seems to handle .JPG a lot better than PS and your file size should be fine...
let me know if you want help,
:)

this question comes up every once-in-a-while... here's a couple of "search results":
search results 1
search results 2
there's more but they all say the same thing...
hope they're helpful...

hey rastermon! i've never thought much on this (before now ;)) as i usually use them for "on-screen" and not output to paper. i'll have to experiment with what you've posted and see which gives the better results.
man... learn something everyday...
thanks for the food-for-thought

Thread: photoshop 7 & CS? | Forum: Photoshop
it's best to keep separate versions available. it's always safer to just assume that the brushes WON'T work in earlier versions... so i'd do an update for ver7 and then those with CS can still use the brushes. if you do the update in CS that knocks out the PS6&7 people

hey sean, try tossing your "pref" file:
the preference file (Prefs.psp) is located in the Documents and Settings/[user profile]/Application Data/Adobe/Photoshop/[version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings folder...
if you want, you can force a new preference file to be created by holding down the Shift-Ctrl-Alt as you launch Photoshop.
a lot of time whenever PS gets all WONKY, tossing the "prefs" file fixes it up (and it's a lot less painful than "re-installing" PS)
as for the XPSP2 being the culprit... can't say one way or the other... (too chicken to upgrade myself yet ;)) maybe others have more input

Thread: new one on me...problems trying to save an image that is open in PS | Forum: Photoshop
Is your OS "windows"??
there is a "who-do vodoo" that happens when you have you folders open with "show thumbnails" and having the file open in PS. Microsoft's Explorer (not the browser but the window explorer) fails to release the file so PS looks at it as "being in use", this causes that whole run-around of "you can't save it cause it's open, but of course it's open, I'M TRYING TO SAVE IT!!!!". Microsoft won't admit to the issue and feels it's Adobe's problem...
best thing is not to use the "thumbnail" feature... :) retrocity
