no Quest i wasn't disagreeing with you at all...! I should have specified who i was directing my information to, but it was a general rant and not intended to be pointed at you... I would agree to disagree with you, but as it happens i agree! tolerance of other's cultures is almost as difficult as tolerance of our own, sometimes. who is the alien? I think that we all are, and words are just an approximation of what really occurs. everyone feels alien to some extent, but sometimes people displace this feeling and blame others for it...?

i hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but "freedom of speech" means that you can say exactly what you want. the word "freedom" has a definition you know, and if you go changing word definitions around on the fly you aren't actually communicating at all. there are no rules for freedom of speech. either you have it (which nobody does, by the way, it's just a nebulous concept) or you don't. nobody here does. if that was the case, i wouldn't get half my posts deleted for TOS violations! (grins) so i have to agree with you, geoegress... for freedom of speech to exist, it must actually BE freedom of speech. there is no grey area here, either you can speak your mind or you can't. politics are so very far from being polite!

yes, those are the ones Quest. any ideas what happened to KPT 4? I wonder what we missed out on!

Try depressing the wheel. If it "clicks", when you push it down, NOT when you roll it, then you have a three-button mouse... It's standard these days!
Thread: PRO-RENDER - grab some this weekend! | Forum: Bryce
and now for a rehash of my previously deleted forum post, minus the negativity.
Pumeco it seems like you've done a LOT of work on this project. I did some digging around in the old threads and read most of it, and aside from all the negativity I have to agree with a few points that PJF and others made many, many months ago.
what exactly is "professional" about Pro-Render? Do you think it's the shading? Do you think that it's the fact that you can't use meshes in TA in Bryce without multiplying their memory load? Do you think it's professional that you can't animate with it without computers being thousands of times faster?
but I have other disagreements as well, for example in #74 PJF states that "True Ambience is close enough to radiosity as makes no significant difference". I apologize in advance for offending you, but you couldn't be further from the truth. TA has what, THREE controls over it's "emission"? i saw the post where you "bounced light", but after working with mental ray for the past few years what you're really doing there is bouncing diffusion, and this is a very different thing.
Corel introduced True Ambience as a quick workaround for actually having to program anything. It calculates nothing like real light. Bryce is a ray-tracer only, and these "rays" are not light rays in any way! They are data rays that describe what color a pixel should be based off of certain elements. Bryce never had (and never will, at this rate) anything resembling photon calculation OR radiosity, and having used other apps that DO have these features it's vastly apparent that TA was just someone's quicky workaround to making radiosity / GI effects.
my main point is this, Pumeco : while you are able to do some interestingly soft shadows and lighting techniques with PR, you could already do those with Bryce. you have merely made a set of materials which utilize TA in a more realistic way. why would you tout this as a "renderer", like mental ray or V-ray? youv'e done no programming, no research into how light works (at least that you've shared here), and basically wasted everyone's time to draw attention to yourself. I don't think that qualifies as "progress".
to paraphrase another old-school Bryce user, in the amount of time it would take to make ONE Pro-Render animation, you could go out and get a job, BUY 3DS / Maya / XSI, and finish the entire animation with time to spare. HOURS per frame? to achieve something that most programs can do in mere minutes or seconds? what exactly is professional about wasting your own time?
but hey, that's kinda harsh I admit. to be honest, I'm impressed by all the labor you've put into this project! Bryce is all about making workarounds to deal with things, but one thing it will never be is "professional", no matter what kinds of materials you throw in there.
honestly, I'd like to see you go pro Pumeco. you have a diligence and devotion which would be a wonder in the high-end atmosphere, although i think you'd give Modulok many headaches!

i'd cruise on over to mayangs.com and dig through their wonderful textures, they have a great many and i think you'll be impressed!

all mice for PC's have three buttons. the middle-mouse button is also the wheel, when you press it down it is the "MMB". are you using a Mac, then?

hotkeys are "Ctrl-a" to select all, "Ctrl-c" to copy to the clipboard, and "Ctrl-v" to paste! politics disgust me in the extreme. I am now sufficiently nauseated by this whole ordeal to voice my vomitous opinion : nowhere is free, everyone bleeds, life's rough no matter WHERE you are, and the three main truths about people remain the same... lovers lie, babies cry, and in war, people die.

what a great thread! someone should make this one stick or something? does anyone know where to find the KPT filters? I saw some threads from years ago where some guy was using them to do all kinds of cool stuff, Equalizer or something?
Thread: Multipass render technique - would probably work great for Bryce too... | Forum: Bryce
the main difference between multi-pass in Bryce and render layers in other programs is that in Bryce you have to set up several scenes to do so, or at least make changes to one scene. imagine if Bryce had "layers" just like Photoshop! well, the big-dogs all do that... but they are two separate things. render-layers and scene layers in Maya, for example, are totally different, giving you a vast amount of flexibility which is of course the name of the game with that proggy. but yeah, my main point was this : sometimes it IS faster to render out different layers! I see all kinds of people wasting their time with Bryce's internal DOF settings, for example, which are garbage. multiply your render times?!?! WHAT?!?! just render a distance mask, and do the blur in postwork. Save yourself hours and hours of waiting for low-quality results anyway... ICM, good workaround for the specularity render! an interesting approach, thanks for the tip...

after all is said and done, I'm still not certain WHY Diolma needed procedural textures...?
Thread: Bryce latest version & deciphering Bryce file code | Forum: Bryce
I think i had the same problem with 3DS MadMax which led me to Lightwave (similar learning curve) and finally to Maya (an adjustable and programmable learning curve!) Scene navigation is vastly programmable and even out of the box far, far easier even than Bryce! for example you don't have to dig around with cam controls on a panel (like in Bryce or Poser) unless you WANT to, but instead can just hold down alt. Alt+LMB is rotate, Alt+MMB is pan, and Alt+RMB is zoom in/out. Select an object and press "f" to focus on it. Stuff like that... i find that even in Rhino I'm constantly pressing alt to move around which just messes Rhino up, and Bryce has become cumbersome compared to the scene naviagtion tools i've been using for the last few years. I guess when something clicks, it just clicks! and it's all preferential, unless of course you have a job to do.

I guess I just don't understand how that would be convenient? Having used other apps extensively, I have to say that "modeling" in Bryce is beyond primitive, and although I think it's fractal-texture methods (DTE) are excellent, they are already exportable as image-maps. If you're trying to export Brycean primitives for example, 3DS or Maya would make no sense of them. Bryce doesn't actually DO booleans, but merely uses the positive/negative as rendering filters, so what you'd get in any other application would be completely unbooleaned objects. You would spend so much time trying to re-boolean everything that it would be faster and more efficient to natively just model in those apps, or in something like Wings or Rhino... I guess my real point is, Anthony, that you may spend a great deal of time trying to convert Bryce-files, only to find that those conversions don't actually save you any time at all! So please take no offense; from a modeler's point of view, it would be very backwards to export anything from Bryce... Anyway, this thread actually has more information on the topic and you people are much closer to deciphering Bryce-files than anything else I've seen, ever! Good stuff, and I apologize if I sounded kinda snotty or elitist here...
