Quote - Have you thought of adding the runtime as a networked drive? Saves you from copying the whole thing.
That's actually how I used to do things - everything was installed to a NAS and I accessed it from there. I had two issues with it - the first was that it was a tad slow (and I suspect that with this machine seeming to be slow in accessing mapped drives that the slowness would be much MUCH worse) and the second was that in Jan '11 (might have been Feb) my NAS up and died on me, a 2TB NAS just vanished POOF. So now for speed and for backup-reliability I have my runtimes locally on any PC I might want to access them from. that way if one thing dies, I don't have to start reinstalling everything from scratch again :( plus of course speed should be the best that each machine can manage at any given time.
I mostly use Synctoy to keep them updated with a central repository, so that updates get echoed, but that doesn't help when I'm trying to copy the whole darned thing. Copy has been going slowly today, but going.
Friday tomorrow and the boy will be returning, but I should have time to play from time to time as usual. I'm very glad that I didn't take anyone's money on the assumption I'd be able to do some serious playing this week, as I'd have been proven wrong!
Cheers,
Cliff

Yeah, I don't have a CD to reinstall this PC from ... only "restore hard drive to factory default". which defaults to having Mcafee installed :(
and tiscali and orange internet software pre-installed. In case I want to use them. Just uninstalling those had the bizzarre effect of improving the initial throughput speed.
Oh well. I really AM going to go watch some telly now, and hope the kettle that isn't watched will boil quicker because of it :)

Cliff

Yeah, there's a 30 day copy of mcafee on this pc - if I disable it then speed (at least initially) is loads better, although it steadily drops. I'm uninstalling it at the moment - or trying to, but it's not happy. Currently in the process of rebooting the PC, and have been for several minutes. I'm going to go watch an episode of "Medium" and if it hasn't rebooted by the time it's finished the PC will get the big ol red button. Sometimes the stuff that comes preloaded on a PC can be good, but most of the time it's just too much grief for nowhere near enough benefit :(

Quote - Cliff, the mesh breaking in the groin area seems to be caused by the MatchJoints script. Before that the mesh does not break. Do you have any pants to have a look at it?
this is a known problem with the MatchJoints script and a major reason that I didn't stop there but went on to develop the two scripts that were eventually included with the first release of the tut. The MatchJoints pair of scripts were mainly included back in because, by copying more (all!) of the joint information from Genesis to clothing they do a better job at matching up hair to the neck, and any clothing to a figure incluidng the Basic Child in its makeup.
POSSIBLE WORKAROUND: Conform the item of clothing you WANT to work to an item of clothing that already DOES work (if such exists) and run MatchJoints. THEN reconform the item of clothing you want to Genesis. An idea I haven't tried yet.
Setting up this new old PC... it seemed to go well until I wanted to copy 36GB of Runtime to it over the network... now either its network card is rubbish/broken or there's some software reason that it can't manage more than a few KB per second. If there is malware that's using up all the bandwidth then this machine is unlikely to ever come out of quarantine, which would render it much less useful than I'd like :( so I haven't forgotten, I'm not stopped working on Genesis just because the tut is out of intro or anything like that - I'm just struggling with various bits of effort.
Having said which, I've tried the CR2 exporter in DS4.5 RC2 and it follows exactly the route in my tut still, there's no confusing deviation as there was between the "current" version and the documentation provided for the original CR2 exporter.

Cliff

In which case yes - I'd definately rig it seperately in each app :)
I'd imagine that the Poser marketplace for good clothes that work WELL right out of the box would be pretty good at the moment - not as much competition there as the DAZ Studio marketplace alone has.

Quote - Is there anything that stops a content creator from creating the new cloth to a transferred V5 or M5 FIRST and THEN make the Daz version?
Nope, but you would have to rig it twice - once for Poser and once for DAZ Studio, as DAZ Studio cannot (as of my most recent info) import Poser weight-mapped rigging.
In theory, if you can get your design "just so" in DAZ Studio, it should be possible to just export the item to Poser and the rigging is already done, taken from the DS rigging. But as we've seen, the hip/pelvis/thighs area can be troublesome.

Quote - Ehm ... Vista??? Ouch.
When one is dealing with old PCs that no-one wants anymore... one has few choices :(
The only PC I've got with Windows 7 is this one - MY PC! :D Otherwise we're still an XP Family. My son is looking forward to this testbed PC being available so he can play "Cut The Rope" - there's an IE9 version that he can't run on his PC because IE9 needs at least Vista. So he's looking forward to it when he gets back home at the end of the week. All I've got to do is make everything work... lol. At least that seems to have picked up today :)

Cliff

I've now bought the Anime Dress for Genesis for testing purposes. Ir remains to be seen whether/when I'll have time to look at it properly.
The PC I've been setting up was a royal PITA yesterday and I've ended up scrapping the Windows isntall and starting again from scratch. Altready today (late lunchtime) I've gotten it further than I managed all day yesterday - so my test platform is coming along now, should be ready to install DS and Poser later today/tomorrow depending on how the rest of the vista updates go (I'm just backing the whole machine up now that I've got SP 1 and SP2 added).
Oh - and as someone very conveniently pointed out a Genesis character that comes with Poser material presets, I feel I CAN now mention that some PAs are trying to produce products that ship with native Poser files. Even though Genesis isn't a Poser native figure, and has well-known deficiencies, content creators seem to be trying to "do their bit" to minimise the effort we have to put in to make our imagery.
I do NOT have a list of those who are trying to support Poser, and I don't expect all of them to succeed in their efforts - in some cases the workload would be excessive. But they're giving it a go, and to me that counts for something :)
Cheers,
Cliff

Quote - I know a few changes/bug fixes have been made in the CR2 exporter itself in DS4.5 - but I have heard nothing with regards to the process itself.
I'm in the process of setting up a machine which I hope to isntall DS4.5 on, and my son (nearly 11 years old now!) is off on a school holiday for the week - so I am HOPINg to get some time to play with 4.5 RC2 specifically.
(please note not a promise. I don't do promises well unless I can make them after the fact).
Quote - Has DAZ give any indication whatsoever that they are going to improve the conversion process? I mean updating the Poser Format Exporter, writing a tool/script to add morphs, adding Genesis/V5/M5 fittings for Poser in hair/props and mat files.
DAZ hinted at something that could do that months ago - I can try and badger them about it but I don't always get happy smiley responses when I do that :(
Part of my reason for setting up a PC specifically for DS4.5/Genesis testing is that the scripting SDK is supposedly shipped with DS as of version 4.5, so it's possible - unlikely, but possible - that I'll be able to start dabbling with DS scripting sometime in the latter half of this week. Using an IDE I've never seen and a language I've never seen, I expect it to be a compelte bust. We'll see - so far this year whenever I try and do anything significant my day jopb gets busy and I have $expensive$ clients to cater for. Which is good for me, but not so good for Poser/DS ... experiments :(
No - I'm not feeling pressured into learning to do scripting that DAZ should have done months ago - I'm interested, so I hope to take a peek, if the time remains available.
Quote - Getting the figure (once the morphs are added) into Poser is now easy. Clothing (if compatible) is easy as well. But having to go via PFE for each and every individual pose or mat file and making thumbnails for them is a very tiresome process which could be automated easily
I don't have any news that I can give you there, I'm afraid :(

Cliff

Quote - Thanks. I have another question. I bought the swole item from DAZ but I can't see it on the dials, nor can I navigate to it from within DS and yet I am sure i installed it in default location.
Love esther
Hmmm... I was hoping to find some documentation at:
http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/start
but the SWOLE readme doesn't seem to be there yet (I'm afraid I don't have it). I've made enquiries but as long as you've started DAZ Stduio 4 AFTER installing, it should have recognised it and finished any installation work... so I would check the readme and if that fails contact support:
https://helpdaz.zendesk.com/requests/new
Sorry I wasn't more help this time :(
Cheers,
Cliff
PS I may be offline a lot today/tomorrow - hoping to cobble together a Vista-based Core 2 Duo PC to put DS 4.5 RC2 on and have a play.

That's definitely the old CR2 exporter, from ages and ages ago - which had a much more error-prone (though also more flexible) route to exporting Genesis. The original video instructions for the exporter should actually apply - basically you've got to export the .OBJ file yourself, first, before exporting the .CR2 :(
Just resetting your downloads from
https://www.daz3d.com/shop/customer/account/itemizedHistory/
should get you the most recent full release I believe... I've just checked it by doing same on my account - it gets the same version number tha tI am using, for Pc and for Mac :D
Alternatively, if you can't wade through the history pages, just grab it from:
