WRT light bleeding in: when I had a similar problem, I found I had duplicate verts and shared (not closed) edges. Not sure why doing a [W] - {remove doubles] fixed a light problem, but anyway, FWIW.

I have found Wayward Company pretty much spot on with their suggestions. Worth a shot, anyway... he says initially: "I don't want the HDRI to overwhelm the interior lights" - sound like what you want to do.

I struggled with lighting interiors as well. What sort-of came out of that was someone mentioned the use of portals as a means to 1) cut down on render times, since light rays travelling out the window don't really need calculating, and 2) checking your ambient occlusion distance settings in the World settings. Not sure if that helps, but just saying: I relate to your frustration.

The new hair shader in Blender 2.8 can do colours, since Blender hair is particles. Not sure if you can colour particles in 2.7x.

Thread: How do I use a shader from another file on the model I working on? | Forum: Blender
I have found the easiest way to multi-use shaders is to turn it into a group. Give it a name you'll recognise... and make a note of which project your shader-group is in.
Then, when you're in your .blend and want to use that shader,, do a:
File -> Append -> BlendWithShader.blend -> NodeTree -> NodeGroupByName
... and then click Append from Library. Now, when you right-click in the Node Editor, and select Add, you'll find your node-group under Group.

I cut my teeth on the 4.xx series, so the change to 2.5x and upward was a bit of a switch. Got there, eventually, but yeah, took a bit. Now, with 2.8, it's more of a curiosity to see how they've moved the cheese. There were too many 2.4x hold-overs in 2.5x+ and cleaning all those up can only be an improvement. Besides which, I almost never rendered in BI - never could get materials to behave. Cycles changed everything, and now Eevee has some exciting characteristics I hope will take advantage of the recent Ryzen upgrade to my system.
