I always seem to have problems with my computers not being up to what I want to do for a render so I tend to get a little frustrated and not do anything. Time has also been a factor over the last couple of years as well. Anyhow I will be building a new comp in September (serious saving til then) so watch this space.
Any suggestions for my dream machine would be welcome.

I purchased a DELL Vostro 1710 about 4 years ago which is now my partners full time comp, (she does a lot of photography). the reason I chose dell is they allowed me to re-spec the basic model to suit my needs for digital art.
I feel that this option is better than buying straight off the shelf and is maybe worth your friends consideration.

If you can't get on with DS4 try going back to an earlier version. This is what I have done as DS4 just causes my comp to freeze all the time. I think trying to do what you suggest with Bryce would fry your Motherboard and every other part of your comp.

AFIK there is an issue with photo textures in 7.1pro but I seem to recall it was only a Mac issue. Are you folks on Macs???? By the way I suffer from CRS syndrome, for those that don't know what that is, ( Can't remember S#t* ).

I recall reading somewhere that the bridge from DS4 to B7 is broken. Don't use 4 myself. you may want to visit the DS and Bryce forums over at Daz3d, I think there is a workaround.

Photoshop and the terrain editor do it for me. Save as obj. Otherwise in B6.3 presets create>object> signman set 2.
