Quote - "OBJ is very limited so devs don't bother.."
Is that so? OBJ is as a rule the only thing that work. Yesterday I downloaded a Collada file from Google (the reason I searched and found this thread...) The only hero that managed to import the file was Cinema 4D (the Germans are famous for being gründlich..). Maya 2009, 3ds max 2009, Poser Pro, Poser8, Vue 7 ALL crashed. The other programs could not be tried as unfortunatly they do NOT support the format.. This is the 10th time I try in vain, the results are always consistent. :(
So don't hold your breath .
"KISS"
Yes but that doesn't negate the fact that the .obj format is only designed to describe a mesh and is limited to that purpose. no shaders, morphs, rigging, animation or any other feature other than the mesh itself so those options have to be handled using other formats, so where is the previous poster wrong in their assessment.
Thread: A morph for piercings? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
the general solution to this is when parenting the piercing to the bodypart make sure you check inherit bends of parent. this makes the prop move along with the surface it is attached to as if it were a conformer, the one drawback to it is that the prop is also distorted along with the surface so it isnt ideal for every prop, but for something as small as a piercing it generally works pretty well.

I agree with Michael314, displacement is definately the way to go for something as tiny as a piercing hole.

I know you wanted free, but the faded industry warehouse by Stonemason is worth mentioning, it's spectacularly detailed and useful for any number of grungy industrial scenes. www.daz3d.com/i/3d-models/-/faded-industry
Thread: How do I use erc? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
well as I said there are always ways to do what you want, sometimes it just takes a bit of extra steps. like having a dummy dial or two to change the formula of the trigger.
Thread: How do I use erc? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
they would be whatever the internal name of the translation and rotation dials are. though you may not be able to use them as is particularly if one or more of them are running in the negative, you may need to work from a dummy dial that is slaved to the rotation using standard valueOpDeltaAdd to give you a more controllable number to feed into the valueOpMinus. you should really read up on all the variables involved in the process in that erc manual linked to by kuroyume0161 above.
Thread: How do I use erc? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
It would go right before the ValueOpDeltaAdd in the morph, it references the bodypart and the morph that is the first one in the sequence.
valueOpMinus
Figure
hip
FirstMorphInSequence
valueOpDeltaAdd
Figure
BODY
MasterDial
deltaAddDelta 1
than of course if you are doing a whole sequence of morphs you want to do in order you can string them together, each morph adding another valueOpMinus so the second would just refrence the first and the third would reference the first and second and the fourth would reference the first second and third, like this.
valueOpMinus
Figure
hip
FirstMorphinSequence
valueOpMinus
Figure
hip
SecondMorphinSequence
valueOpMinus
Figure
hip
ThirdMorphinSequence
valueOpDeltaAdd
Figure
BODY
MasterDial
deltaAddDelta 1

well the fact that there is already a valueOpMinus operator involved complicates things a bit, I would need to know the whole rundown of what you want to do and how you want to time it in order to advise you.
but another thing you can do is create a dummy dial that is only there to change the forumula of a rotational or translational dial to one that is easier to work with by setting the dummy dial up with erc code that refrences rotation so that it can give a 0 to 1 (or whatever other number range you need) result and do your subtraction from that.

Content Advisory! This message contains profanity
Show me where my mooning would make me more than selling content and I'll sign up today. :) frankly I think people would pay me more not to put my butt on the internet.
you keep insisting that I didn't read your comments concisely, I can assure you that I did, perhaps it's just that you don't like my responses to them? In any case as the old addage goes, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. obviously ours differ.

Ah ok I didn't realize that your theme was an attempt to push AM. I have nothing against him, but I don't particularly find him versatile enough to completely cover the gammet as far as characters are concerned. No single figure is, for reasons laid out by others already, and if it was possible you would still end up with the bloated figure issue where you would need tons of morphs to get every variation possible. Believe me if there was one figure I could create content for that covered every variation and the software could really handle the requirements of such a figure it would make my life simpler as a content creator.
as far as your argument about whore clothes, sorry guess you didn't look at my catalog, there is far more conservative stuff in there than not. but bottom line, most merchants are in this to make a living, they can have all the artistic integrity and sheer guts as they want but that doesn't actually put food on the table, and as long as customers are buying more of the sexy stuff, and I can attest that I have seen actual numbers that say they are, merchants will go with what is most likely going to put that food on the table. yelling at the Merchants who sell the stuff is putting the cart before the horse because the merchants wouldn't sell it if people didn't buy it in huge numbers.

Just for the hell of it.
#1 rabid Faerie fans have been around for a lot longer than D&D or Disney, and there have always seemed to be people fascinated with them, and wanting to do pictures of them en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cottingley_fairies why? IDK
#2 the market hates a vacuum, new figure means new opportunity to create new products for the figure that people will want because they have the figure but have no content for the figure yet. the creator of the figure doesn't have to pay merchants to support their figure because the merchants know that fact. and on your second point in that question the time frame, its pretty spread out as others have alluded there have been two versions of poser since P6 (3 if you count Poser Pro)
#3 The secondary morph package thing? Well that started out based in part on people's desire to have more and more morphs in a figure, but complaining that the figures have gotten too bloated, you yourself champion the one figure fits all concept well that means more morphs generally. and with V2 there was no way to expand the figure beyond it's base morphs easily. Yes there were aftermarket morphs and they could be loaded with Morph Manager and by other means but it wasnt a simple one click solution (Don't get me stared on people's dependence on one click solutions). as far as why people sell characters based on those prepackaged morph channels rather than create their own. the answer is simple, conforming clothing support, if you use stock morphs than more clothing will fit your character and more people will buy the character, yes there are a number of merchants like Blackhearted who create their own character morphs from scratch, but try to find clothing that will fit those characters and you will see why everyone isn't doing it. That's not to say this will always be true, Morph transfer to clothing has come a long way since the Tailor. Dimension3Ds Morphing Clothes is a perfect example of how far its come. also we have dynamic clothing which doesn't have to be concerned with morphs.
#4 if you are on the internet and don't realize that sex sells now than I don't know what to tell you. and btw yes there is a realistic Police Uniform for V4, I created it. www.daz3d.com/i/3d-models/-/real-world-heroes I like doing realistic clothing, but I can tell you that it's not as lucrative as the "Whore Clothes" which is why you see so many of them and less of the realistic stuff.
#5 I'm working on it. (; But I also like to do the female stuff. and again, the female stuff sells better so guess what most merchants focus on?
Thread: How do I use erc? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I should also say that the valueOpKey operator could do the function you want as well with only a single value operator per morph, but it only works in Poser 7 and 8

Quote - I have a figure using ERC that has two different actions happening when the dial is turned, is there any way to change the order in which the actions happen?
If I could make the second one happen before the first then the dial would work as it should.
Yes this is the sort of thing that ValueOpMInus is perfect for, set both morphs with hard limits of 0 min and the second morph to 1 max have both morphs refrence a master dial with a standard valueOpDeltaAdd statement than on the first put a valueOpMinus statement refrencing the second morph. basically the valueOpMinus statement tells the first morph to subtract the value of the second morph before referencing the master dial so if the master is set to .5 than the second morph is also .5 and that would make the first morph -5 added to the master which is .5 which means the first would be at zero, only when the second morph stops would the first be able to go into the positive. You can do a whole chain of sequential morphs like that, each referencing all of the previous ones with valueOpMinus statements, though I have found that the more you do in sequence the more difficulty poser has calculating the math I find 6 or 7 work ok but beyond that things get choppy.

of the modelers you listed:
I have to second the suggestion of C4D the core is a bit pricey compared to some of the others but it has one of the best modelers out there, and can be used for grouping your mesh which some other modelers don't tend to do as well, and includes bodypaint 3D a premier 3D paint program which also does great uv mapping.
I think Hexagon has one of the easiest interfaces and is a great modeling tool, it has basic 3D painting, and uv mapping. its drawback is in order to use it for grouping you have to split the mesh which I don't like to do. It's also the least expensive of the bunch you listed. (you can even get a version as well as a version of carrara by buying this book http://www.daz3d.com/i/shop/itemdetails/?item=9166
ZBrush is a great tool, but it isnt a particularly efficiant modeler. in order to get a decent polycount you need to fist sculpt your model and than draw a new topology over the top of that. Also you will need to go to an outside tool to uv map your models. but it has great painting and displacement tools, second to none.
Rhino is primarily a Nurbs modeler (though I believe they have added some poly tools with the latest version) Nurbs models do not convert to poly mesh very efficiently so its not an ideal tool for creating poser content, though there are some modelers who use it, I think it's going out of favor for the more poly based modelers.
Thread: Odd conforming clothing question | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Yep for future refrerence, the reason the erc slaved in poser was becouse there were no figure numbers in the erc code. Poser tacks on figure numbers when saving a figure with erc so the code would look like this.
valueOpDeltaAdd
Figure:1
BODY:1
Bulk
deltaAddDelta -2.15517
the number would be different depending on how many figures are loaded into the scene before the clothing is loaded. the :1 is there to help prevent crosstalk. if you take the numbers out like you have in your erc than Poser for some reason automatically puts in the number of the figure that is selected when you load your conformer. and you have forced crosstalk. (studio on the other hand ignores the number altogether and automatically slaves all channels that have the same name on the conformer and the base figure)
