"What would you use GI for if you're not using indirect lighting? That's what it IS" Indirect lighting is one facet of GI. Caustics is another. They are independent of each other. When you are using the GI engine you can activate caustics in your scene without turning on indirect lighting. Kix, Why not try rendering the lights in the scene in multiple passes? Actually, it's Fractal Design that developed the program, MetaCreations only bought it from them.

Creationengine.com has the 1.1 to 2.0 upgrade for $99. As long as you can prove you're a student you're in. For $99 it's more than worth it.Thread: PS7 vs. the 1995 PS deluxe home version. | Forum: Photoshop

Well, if it didn't work out for you, just take 7 off your machine and reinstall version 3 again or contact Adobe support by phone or email and tell them of your problem with 7. I'm sure they know how to install it adn make it work.

That would be my guess AS. As long as you're upgrading from a licensed copy of 7, installing 7.0.1 is no problem. There is no "lockout". The only reason it would not work is if you are trying to upgrade from a version other than 7. 7.0.1 is a free update for current users of 7. Why would Adobe want to lockout licensed users from a free update? You didn't try to go directly from 3 to 7.0.1 did you??

It took you 8 years to update from version 3 and suddenly you're hot for the .1 update to 7? What's your rush? ;-)

If you buy a new car do you actually drive it or do you just leave it parked in the garage and ask others if you should drive it? ;-)

To paraphrase JFK: Ask not what your software can do for you but what you can do with your software.
Thread: PS7 vs. the 1995 PS deluxe home version. | Forum: Photoshop
So you actually have PS7 available and yet instead of just installing it you came here first to ask if you should?? If you are in fact still using the 1995 version that puts you at version 3 and by no stretch of the imagination is PS7 not superior to PS3. I can't believe that anyone would even think to ask such a thing. PS3 doesn't "seem" like the dark ages in comparrison to PS7, it actually is. The thing to keep in mind however is that PS7 will not "do" anything for you to improve your artwork. You still have to do that yourself. While PS7 is a vast improvement over PS3 that improvement means nothing if artistically, you are not an improvement over the 1995 version yourself. If you're skill level hasen't improved then the most advanced software in the world will do nothing for you. Keep in mind this is not a critic of YOUR work, this statement applies to anyone who asks what new versions of software will "do better for them". It sounds as though the problems that Sean is experiencing no doubt stem from his own computer and not from PS7. PS7.0.1 is completely stable.
Thread: slice tool... | Forum: Photoshop
You're on an "asking" spree. There's a bit of a difference. Sit down, read the manual and take a little time to figure out some things on your own and then you'll be off on a "learning" spree. I'll even give you a head start. If you're using PS7 the functions of the slice tool are very well defined on page 289.

Thread: An Outline Plug in | Forum: Photoshop
You don't need a plug in for that, it's been built right into Photoshop for quite sometime.
Once your selection is made go to EDIT/STROKE
OR
Go to LAYER/LAYER STYLE/STROKE
Both of these will give you the option to run a line around your selection. You determine the thickness of the line, the color of the line and whether the line runs around the inside, outside or center of your selection. The first option adds it directly to the image. The second adds it as a layer effect so it's easier to make modifications to it if you want to. Of course the selected area has to be on it's own layer for that to work.
A different approach you can use if the selected are you want to ouline is on it's own layer is to have it selected and then go to SELECT/MODIFY/EXPAND. Place a layer behind the layer with your selection on it and fill it with color. Sometimes this can produce a smoother result than the stroke depending on how thick you want the outline to be.
Thread: Carrara vs. Ampai | Forum: Carrara
While Amapi is good don't be fooled by the hype for it or lack there of for Carrara as a modeler. Modeling in Carrara is hardly substandard. Once you understand it there will be little that you can not make with it. You will be pleasently surprised.
