You can use PoseRay http://mysite.verizon.net/sfg0000/Load the model and in the materials tab press Groups->Materials and the model will have materials based on the groups. See attached image of new materials with random colors.
Then set the material properties and save the model as an OBJ file for later use.
good luck

Thread: OT: Are there any free renderers apart of POV-Ray and DS ? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL

There is a tutorial for this effect in the PoseRay manual. Tutorial name: "Using PoseRay to import models into Poser/DAZ|Studio" With PoseRay you really do not have to learn POV-Ray to use it. Besides you can export the modified mesh from PoseRay to use back into your application.Thread: OT: Are there any free renderers apart of POV-Ray and DS ? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL

PoseRay will split the mesh along creases and leave the rest smooth.Thread: Texturing/Import Difficulties and Much Frustration HELP! =) | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL

You can also use PoseRay to split the vertices along the creases only. http://user.txcyber.com/~sgalls/ See the gallery for an example and check the manual tutorials for this procedure. good luck, FlyerXThread: Why can't Poser 6 import 3ds files? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL

Did you use a poser scene to setup the materials in PoseRay? That is the easiest way of doing it. Also make sure that you are using PoseRay 3.8.4 If you still have problems please let me know. My email is in the PoseRay manual. FlyerX

Try PoseRay.It can read OBJ files (among others), tesselate and split them by edges and re-export them so that Poser or other programs do not autosmooth the model.

See the samples in the gallery section of my site and the tutorial in PoseRay's help file to do this.
good luck,

PoseRay can fix those smoothed edges. You can split the faces by crease and save it as an obj for Poser import.Check the gallery section of my site for examples of Poser import with PoseRay. Also read the tutorial in the manual.
good luck,
