I'm thinking it may have been worth trying a vertical shot, to see if it helped emphisize the subject. ?

Congrats on your new money pit! I can't wait to see how it does with some snake pictures.

You'll see lots of recommendations to always use a lens hood. As said before, it helps eliminate some of the stray light coming from around your scene, resulting in more contrast. It also most definitely provides protection. On more than one occaision I've been saved from a limb wacking my lens. It makes a loud PING and I'm like, I love you lens hood.

Forest landscapes are always hard. There's always a lot of background noise to deal with. I really love the sweeping curve you've included in your composition. From the path all the way down through the main tree shadows. A couple of things I don't like... the center tree essentially cuts the canvas in half. To me this breaks up the harmony. Also, the shadow in the far right bottom has no purpose. I'd clone it out, and/or lighten it.

I use the Hyperdrive HD80, which is a version behind the current Hyperdrive SPACE model...and haven't had any problems. It uses double AA batteries, which I had several rechargeables already, so it worked out for me. It's not a media viewer, it's strickly for transferring your media card files to it's harddrive.
Here's the link to get the current version info. It looks like its went through an overhaul... http://www.hypershop.com.

Howdy and welcome back. It's always nice to see someone bitten with the photography bug. As for your quest... Fuji has a newer FinePix model out and it's still under 500 bucks too (barely). Haven't really heard any reviews of it though. 500 dollars is really close to the entry DSLR level. I'd be tempted to hold out and save save save to go that route. Good luck!

One thing Nikon is bad about is not including it's Raw image editing software with the camera. It usually ships with a lite version. To get the full version you have to fork over another hundred or so bucks.
Not really sure if the D200 ships with it or not. The D70 didn't, and the D80 doesn't.
I use Photoshop CS2 and it's Raw plugin, but I've heard the Nikon software works really well.

Well the clouds are the strong point, almost abstract. That's what I would go with. I would crop the left side so ALL the shingles were gone. Then rotate it either 90 or 180 degrees... but that's just a personal taste. Those clouds are awesome.

If I were going to buy right now, I don't think I'd consider the D70s. The D80 or D200 would be my minimum Nikon considerations. The lens choice would be the other important decision. It all depends on how much Santa is willing to spend.

Not a very good reputation. I wouldn't buy from them.

Don't forget the excellent review site... http://www.dpreview.com/. Some of the cameras have full reviews, in which you can view image samples at their original size. Might help for some sample prints.
