I wish I could contribute but you justmade me realize you could use nodes in internal render :) Sorry for being of little use.

hehe right on. that icon was my problem. Muchos thanks again :)
As for the material problem. it got resolved when I cleaned up the maps in internal render mode.

Update: I tried using the nodes. I couldnt call new texture either by clicking the open icon. That is to say when making a new texture image node and clicking on open then choosing the file cave3.jpg I was still getting cave1.jpg on the node. Then I tried typing "3" in the texture name to replace and it worked. I managed to change my material to the new texture. cave3.jpg even showed up in the uv/image editor.... All was working fine! except...
When I importing to poser I was still getting the normal maps as diffuse map instead of cave3.jpg. I went and opened the mtl file and the material in it is still the normal texture. After deleting mtl several time I was still getting normal map for my materials in mtl file. The problem was coming from Blender. I shifted to blender internal render mode and cave3 and after a while I realized the texture in the texture modifier tab was set to be the normal map. under the image rollout menu in texture modifier tab, the image set as old cave.jpg and under the source: header it was set as the normal map.
So I guess I have figured out now where was my problem was coming from. But to be honest I have no clue what's going in that programme. if the interface was less confusing I would get a clear picture of what I am doing.

Thank you again for the precious information Touchwood :)
By the way I have another question about Blender. WHen I use materials I select "use nodes" but in the node editor there are no nodes except for rendering. Is there a way to make the nodes corresponding to the scene materials show up in the editor?
To Paul: I have yet to try wing3d. Which one do you prefer? how good does it stand compared to Poser?

Ok thank you. By the way Is there a way to quickly select an object after it's been joined to another?

Well they are all set to use nodes. The reason why the light colour came out as white is because I was using openglrender at the bottom of the viewports. I suppose it's a better workflow to test out coloured lighting in viewport with internal render and use cycles for final render. wish I didnt have to reset materials over when I shift to other render. Thanks for the input guys. F12 is the way to go :)

Yes I wish there was an object level in edit mode to quickly select joined object but both your solutions seems very valid. Just curious though.. is the smoothing wrong when object are joined? I mean the vertices are not merged right? that's something I have yet to try.

Hello the issues I have with the renderer is a bit different. I am joining a screenshot to illustrate them. In the top row you can see that since I didnt click on "only render" in the N menu unwanted elements show up in the renderings. ( the camera the outline of the selected object and the ray from the light object.) Is it normal? is this something to check everytime I make a render? I thought those wouldnt be rendered by default)
Secondly my main issue in the bottom row. You can tell that the light in cycles is set to have the same colour as in blender internal render. However the lights doesnt show up in the viewport and neither in the renders.
Moreover the light in the blender internal render, is set to cast shadows but no shadow ever shows up.

thank you all for your contributions. I changed to cycle renders and soon after that I realized that moving viewport camera away from model removed the offset.. (???)
Now it's about all clean except in one place where a narrow path leads to a big cave. Also I have noticed that when I use the texture paint across seam (using a dark texture over a white background) sometimes it leaves out white spots near the seams and I have to paint it from a specific angle to remove the spots.
Strangely enough I exported model to poser and I had white seams in preview window everywhere I changed settings and the seams tended to disappear when moving towards the polygons. I have restarted Poser and the seams have totally disappeared...
thanks for your suggestions. In the future I will try using smart UV as you pointed out. it seems a very effective way to use texture painting. any idea if it's also useful when baking normal maps?

Actually no I mark edges as seams and then I use the basic default unwrap. I will look up for the island margin setting.
Thanks!

I have been using Blender to make a cave setting for poser. I have been using texture painting with stencil in hope of removing apparent seams between uv islands/clusters. However when I paint over the seams it doesnt remove them the texture seems to be slightly offset on each side of uv seams. I can camouflage it by adding a lot of different colour but it's still there. I dont understand because the stencil should add pixels on each side of the seam in 3d view as if there was none and I have been trying different "bleed" settings to see if it made any difference ( it doesn't ) I tried relaxing the uv maps a bit with uv sculpting tool but it doesnt make a difference. Could it be a setting in the texture brush options or in the texture panel?
Thanks in advance if anyone has a solution for this problem
