I know a guy who runs a small press, publishing games and books. He goes out and trolls the graphic forums and sites looking for people who do interesting work that matches what he's looking for that week. Sometimes it's space, sometimes it's erotic, sometimes it's military, etc. Then he emails them and tells them what he wants and asks for a price and timeframe. He's looking for prompt, professional responses that show the person is willing to do the work at a reasonable price in the time frame he needs. Color cover work pays better then BW interior art, but you're not going to get rich on occasional $100 to $1000+ jobs. But commercial sales means that your computer, your software, your 3d models, travel to siggraph etc is all a "Business Expense" and hence deductable.
Thread: Something interesting in the Wavefront OBJ specs... | Forum: Poser Technical
Way back when Zygote released a pair of models with the full obj hierarchy in place from Wavefront. This was a mistake on their part, as the final step was supposed to be removal the overlapping groups, many of which are not available in poser. IIRC, I'm the one who pointed out to them the wacky OBJ files. They were loadable in poser, but acted sort of squirrelly. They also had VAST rsr files. They fixed them and shipped out ones with the multiple groups removed. I have the ones with all the groups around somewhere, but they are only of academic interest. The use of multiple groups is one of the tricks that zygote/DAZ uses to make their models, particularly morphs. This is also why you will probably not get DAZ to ever send you their internal use OBJ files.

There is also a seperate genital region. Hmm, there has to be trick to making the FBMs work, but I haven't found it yet.
Thread: U.S. Supreme Court strikes down law regarding virtual child "porn" | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
A good decision on a bad law. Notice they didn't challenge the "morph real children's pictures" part of the law, which is much more defensable by the DOJ. As one of the justices noted, they were basically creating a thought crime. It is hard to see how this law would allow persecution of real criminals and none of the other laws against child porn or rape? But it would shut down 'Romeo and Juliet' pretty damn efficently, given the 15 year jail sentence. With regard to the mill. kids, well, as the kids are based on Vicky I would suspect that it is a trival task with morphmanager. Hopefully nobody will feel inclined to post their "masterpiece" so they have to get squished.
Thread: UVMapper question? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
The OBJ files are (mostly) mac formated files. Macs terminate lines (IIRC) with a ctrlM, not the ctrlJ that most other OS's use. Some of the files have even weirder line endings. This caused me more than a bit of trouble trying to write scripts to reprocess poser OBJs.
Thread: UVMapper question? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
A lot of programs see the Zygote/Daz models as having hundreds or thousands of groups. Painter 3D was one of them. Most of the obj files in the geometry files have the groups spread all throughout the vertices, mostly because they actually use a different set of groupings when they are building the model.

I don't understand the surprise. They only tripled the size of the code and added lots more fancy doddads. Sort of like trying to upgrade the performance of a car by giving it a new paint job and putting 2000 pounds of lead in the trunk. "Trust us, it will work better." Kevin

Cool. Now if you could come up with a fix for the damn obj importer Maxon inflicts on us. . . . Kevin

He's in sort of an ugly bind. Any time he opens a place with downloads he quickly gets kicked off due to volume. The main homepage he has lists all his stuff, but you can't get to the zips. His actual working pages change all the time. Best bet is to email him.

That is fairly cool. Looks a lot like the BBJ site. Are you doing the multiple interior scheemes, or just one?
Thread: Go to DAZ... the girls are online and for sale | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
They are having some sort of database engine problem. The source for the empty page has hundreds of DB error messages.
Thread: What would you like to see in a new Poser book | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I would like something that blew through the basics, then spent time on the more advanced stuff. Everything in one place would make it very useful. Figure creation, joint setup, comforming figures, Morphs (particularly FBM and JCM) - and how to deal with the issues these have. Magnets, and an effective use of the wave deformer. CR2 internals and how to do fancy stuff with them. Use of CR2editor and CR2edit. Good hair creation (layered transparancy), use of UVmapper. Lighting examples (5 or more), with various options showing how the scene changes when you start using lighting corectly vs the poser default. All of these need available files showing it in various stages so people can follow along and try to reproduce it.
Thread: Opinions on interior lighting..... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I'm not a lighting guru, but I'll try anyhow. The main thing I see with the halogen lights in my place are the very bright spots on the walls and celing, which isn't what this looks like. Most halogens are indirect lights, which doesn't work in Poser, so you will have to use a set of lights to simulate this. (as a concept, build a lamp, place the up light in it, crank intesity high and wide and set cast shadows on. Then place a much lower powered light pointing at the figure. You might well need extra fill lights to keep the interior details.) There are no shadows shown here, which isn't right. The outside of the window should be much darker than the inside, or you should be getting reflections and hot spots on the glass.
Thread: another newbie cry for help....:) | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Use the body scale dial. Don't try to use the body size menu. This only works for the old p2 figures.
