I reinstalled Poser and it's looking like the background issue has something to do with the lighting...
I was able to adjust the lighting so that the back grid showed - but still get a plain black field when I import a background jpg - and I've tried several different jpgs.

Thanks, Hornet3d, I will try that when I get a chance and get back to you - have to go out now.

I don't have Poser 11 so I am not sure on the fix to this problem but assuming it is the same as Poser 2014 do you have 'show background picture' ticked under the display tab. If that does not work, how are you importing the picture (might be a silly question but worth asking).
Yes; I do have 'Show Background Picture' ticked. I'm wondering if I should try re-installing or if there's something I don't know about proper formats for bg images. Pixel depth minimums?

I thought I was, but background appeared black from the start
To clarify, I thought I was starting from the default settings. I opened Poser, the ground state showed the grid below, but black behind Andy. I went to Display>Guides>Ground plane which made a flat grayish background. I then went to File> Import > Background picture, but the background shows as a black rectangle. I used a jpg image. Should I be using something else? Thanks!

Yes assuming you are using Poser 11, select GROUND then in the properties panel, on the right on the interface and uncheck Visible. This hides "the construct", which is something new in poser 11 so the tutorial probably hasn't caught up with it yet.
Whether 'visible' is checked or unchecked the background still shows only black. I wonder if I inadvertently did something to the cameras or some other setting?
