I like it. I agree with the gray background and would like to see black with the edges of the portrait softened and blended into the black. I also agree with Alpha about the detail layer.

I really like this photo and what you've done with it. As for critique -- your art, in whatever form, makes me go outside my own "vision". (for lack of a better word) I cannot critique something that makes me think and that makes me view things in a different way. I can only take it in. Does that make sense? :) I think of photography as art in itself and also as a tool or medium that can be used as a base or enhancement to something new. I don't think there are hard and fast rules. The interpretation or perception lives inside the person behind the camera. ~Lisa

Oh, wow ... (looking for a zoom tool here) What IS that? How positively creepy. I think I'd be compelled to go back and to stay away.... maybe for the same reasons ... Great shot! It's kinda "Blair Witchy". Was this originally a color photo?

I missed this in the Gallery but I love it! It looks as splint said and more! I can't believe that's Lake Erie! It looks like it was touched by the finger of God and frozen in time. Great work!

Wow! What a story this picture tells. I think I'd ask before I took pictures for the most part ... but in a situation like this photo, I'm not sure what I'd do. I think I'd take the picture first and hope for the best.

Great to have this new forum! Thanks, Syyd and Colm! Well, here goes .. probably more than you want to know about me but ... I'm Lisa and I'm new (again) to Photography. I had started studying Photography about 20 years ago with a Canon AE1, but life, motherhood and other things kept my interest to purely "event" photography. About 10 years ago I accidentally smashed my Canon beyond repair and wasn't able to replace it until the past few years when I got a Minolta. This new camera and seeing what I can do with it has reignited my desire to learn. My son had expressed an interest in learning Photography so for Christmas 1999 we bought him a fully manual Canon. I thought I'd start at the basics and learn with him. He was really excited about learning but didn't have a chance to begin. He passed away on Easter Sunday of last year after an auto accident. Just recently I've found myself seeing the world around me again with new eyes and am wanting to capture that view on film. I plan to learn the basics using my son's camera as well as my own. I'm interested in learning everything I can about both traditional and digital photography. I've posted two of my photos in my Gallery here but am dissappointed at the lack of constructive crticism. (Yes, I can take criticism, good, bad and ugly) As a beginner, I think they look good but don't know what I can improve or how they look from a professional point of view. I love art, being creative and learning new things and look forward to this forum becoming a place to do just that and more. The attached photo is one taken with the Minolta very early in the morning on the beach. The sky had just started to glow with the sunrise and I caught Lucki sniffing around in a pile of seaweed. I just bought an HP C500 2 Megapixel. So far I'm pretty pleased with the photo quality, however I haven't shot much more than Lionel Trains that I'm selling for my dad on ebay. I bought it after seeing a review on ZDTV comparing five affordable/quality cameras. The top was the Olympus D490 but they said the photo quality of the HP was just as good.
