Hi bluevenus!
What you can do to make the Smudge Tool work faster is to uncheck the spacing checkbox in the properties for the brush.
This usually speed up things.

You where on the right track, but it was under "brush tip shape" the changes was made. And its called spacing not steps as I thought. It was just a slip with the mouse that led me to it, I just accidently clicked the "brush tip shape" text and there it was!! thanks for pointing me in the right direction! M V H Mten

Why not hide the pallets? On a PC you press "TAB" I'm not sure what key to press on a Mac but look in your PS helpfiles. To bring up the color pallet you can use one of the function keys on a PC, so for Mac look at the helpfiles. To get rid of all distraction on a PC the "F" key gives you fullscreen mode, must work on Mac as well. M v h Mten

If yoy dont find any of the advanced features that retrocity is suggesting try to scan the photo at different angels. This can sometimes help to get rid of those moarpatterns. Mten
