If you have a normal map that is part of or for a UVmapped, sculpted object, it should apply via 'import normal map' just fine.
You can also load a normal map on a terrain or Vue primitive, metablob etc if you load it as a layer. If you do so just straight up, you'll get the error message about UVs.
Though I've not shown anything in the galleries (too busy building content) I've been playing with normals since V9. They aren't all that and a bag of chips.
They are cool no doubt and look great if executed well. What made me drop them in favor of old fashioned bump and highlight was that, in the function editor, the normal map takes over and you can't mix it with anything without headache.
My new kit Cliffhangers was at first using only normals....but because of the limitations, I did the whole kit over and dropped the normals....

Another way to do it would be to render your ship in the same atmosphere as your final pic, save out the alpha and make alpha plane objects. You can have a whole fleet with almost no overhead at all.....for anything in the distance.

I'm afraid I can't help you as I don't do any animating......but I'm sure there's someone here who does.

That is not a procedural material. It's an alpha plane object. You cannot animate it.
The things that can be animated are the flame, smoke and lava materials.
Newb's ok. It's the only place to start from lol.....

You won't see it animating until the renders are complete.
In the material editor, go to effects, check velocity of material origin, put in some values and then make yourself an animation timeline and start rendering. When finished you should see the fire material flicker or move like glowing coals.....

I can't wait. Played Oblivion twice, Fallout 3 with all the addons and just finished 111 hours in New Vegas. Sandbox gaming is my favorite type. Bring it on!
Thread: Charging for art work | Forum: Vue
I do pretty much as mdt does....with a few variations. If it's mural work, I charge 50 -70 bucks a square foot depending on complexity and size. If it's digital portaits of children or pets, I might do 20 bucks a pop. (without framing or anything like that) My standard hourly rate is 50 bucks an hour.
I based my digital work on the local printing and digital media businesses in the area. Scope them out and look at their prices. Some charge 25 or 30 bucks just to change file formats. Some charge the same for just putting it on a cd. Many times if I list that kind of stuff for a client and tell them I'll throw all that kind of digital manipulation in for free, they get all smiley.

Thread: What was the best *FREE* tip you got for using Vue? | Forum: Vue
One of the best tips I got was from 'Murdoch' who was one of the guys who created 'Myst'. It concerned postwork.
When there were characters or figures in his image, they would be rendered on separate layers and in Photoshop he would use the Liquify brush to ever so slightly nudge them to take the inherent Poser 'stiffness' out of them. It works to great effect.
Thread: Anyone using VueTools? | Forum: Vue
I use Vue tools all the time as well as Grid Modeler. But it only works with Vue 6. However, it can work with V7 if you install the free wxpython from Cornucopia. I think.
The best thing for you to do is contact Chipp and ask him.
