Go to the transparency channel of the hair material, and add 86% transparency.
If it still looks odd, delete the colour production function, as well as the bump function if there is one.
It will be quite slow to render, but it's the only way for a good hair day.

Sorry for the late reply,

Saving the alpha info worked great, thanks a heap! As for the luminosity settings I haven't had the opportunity to test it yet but I will do so soon.
