I agree, and even worse, Vista is the beta for a stable OS in the future. Maybe after the 2nd  Service Pack. I think almost a third of the Vista code is new. And partly erratic, as every new piece of software. For other 3d Applications, like 3ds max, Vista is not one of the supported OS now.

I totally agree as well.
Compared to 3ds max (I payed about $5000 for plus environmental plugins), VUE, although it  still has a few errors, is really great.
My max9 installations are crashing every now and then, VUE6 only once a day. Be positive! ;-)
Read the Autodesk max9 (10 times as expensive) newsgroup and you will hear the same protest songs as here. 
New Software is erratic. Thats a fact of life. If one can't accept it, he shouldn't buy it (brand new).

Just click the little "ghost" icon in the in the material- or atmosphere browser and you'll never see the cornucopia content again.

Funny. I don't encounter major problems with VUE inf. No memory leaks, no crashes.
The VUE XStream in conjunction with 3ds max causes more problems and max crashes every now and then. But max crashes every now and then wether you use VUE or any other given plugin... ;-)

I've been application programmer for some years and I know, how hard it is, to program a software, that is mainly errorfree. Impossible? To be honest, we never published one, that was without known issues. Problem is, that an application running on one PC must not on another.
Problems depend on a lot of circumstances, like hardware and Operating system constellation as well as on other installed programs or packages.
Thats why software producers need us paying customers as beta-testers. :-)

of course VUE has no realtime rendering capabilities. It was never intended for.
For most of the scenes, VUE IS intended for, this will be true for the next decades, because, even if computer speed doubles every year, it takes 17 years until VUE would be able to render a film (25/30 fps) in realtime, when a single frame renders one hour today.

3ds max, for instance, doesn't have realtime render capabilities either, but, with a plugin (RTRE) , you can get realtime renders in a kind of preview(low, low) quality.

the side by side error is not a unique one, but a class of errors. The more important information follows the SBS error. Paste the error description and the name of the scene here, perhaps we can see what is causing it.
btw, did you install the update for VUE Inf 6 ?

There are 2 bugs which cause this.

1. The assembly manifest of Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC is incorrect. It has version 8.0.50727.42 instead of 8.0.50608.0.

Solution
Change the version number

should be changed to

1. Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC is referenced not by the application but by MFC80[ud].dll
    
   Solution
   Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC directory has to be under Microsoft.VC80.MFC directory and not at the same level.

No, this portion of SBS is written by Seagate. The purpose is filling the harddisk ;-)

SidesBySide is part of the Microsoft Visual Studio development tools for C++ (and perhaps the other programming languages as well).
I once encountered a lot of SBS errors saying SBS was'nt correctly installed. Some progs did'nt react after starting and all my application log was full.
After I installed the C++ V8 redist package (you can obtain it from MS download), I do'nt have problems any more.
