Aha! - Breakthrough!
I finally found it. It's Filter -> Stylise -> Diffuse (Anisotropic)
Thanks for looking, and it goes to show how many filters aren't used in the filters gallery, its a nice addition but kinda annoying when it doesn't show them all

Hehe, the left as you look at it (the speckled one)
I have no plug-ins - its a clean install.
I'm still thinking some kind of blur was involved - I do remember a full-screen pop up window for adjustments (ie. a filter from the drop down toolbar which doesn't appear in the gallery option, eg - blur, render etc)
sigh
Here's a larger version to make the detail a bit more clear www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php

Nope, sorry - that's not it.
It has a kind of fluid effect, noticed more in the leaves (driving me nuts!)

Any hints on how?
On changing the background colour (whether rendering as .png or not) You're presented with a colour picker (which inherently doesn't accept no colour as a colour)

OK, I have a question. Being a complete n00b with the editor isn't too bad, I know not to touch the yellow transformation triangle, but when I've got so far and save what I've done for another day, when I open it up again, although the image is exactly the same, ALL of the transformation triangles have moved. Wouldn't this make an illegal entry and how do I stop it happening? (I've tried the reset, and that just changes the image slightly and the triangles still look different)
Thread: Apophysis: "Use flame background"?? | Forum: Fractals
You can set the background colour for your editor window to make it easier to see the editor triangles. The 'Flame background' refers to the backroud colour option in the Adjust menu(To get away from that all-pervading black) As for the superimposing - I'm not sure, would be nice if you could. Like they say, if in doubt, photoshop :)

OMG Wow! Thanks, that did the trick (who thought that 0.02 would have such an effect) I'm still not too sure what all the editor triangles do, but I've now got a series I'll have to post, all fixed! Thanks again!
