Well, I was a bit hasty. seems it's not actually crashing. it just freezes up for a little and then returns to normal. maybe because of reversing the hip joint doubling.
An unforseen but very welcome side effect, is that unlike the native bvh exporter, it doesn't make every frame in my pz3 into a keyframe. I finally no longer have to worry about accidentally saving after an export, and destroying all the keyframes. so yay.
I've lost many animations that way before. What a stupid feature.
Thread: Is it possible to modify exporters? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Hi phil. fbunse is one of those other animators I mentioned :)
I'm doing a little testing with the version here: http://www.philc.net/temp/BVH/
Everything works fine, except that it makes poser freeze and crash after an export. It comes up with the little dialog that it successfully exported to but that never goes away, and poser goes into Not Responding state at that point. I still get the exported bvh so it's not that bad, just somewhat annoying. Using poser 7.0.0.63
Any idea what my problem might be ?

Wow, thank you phil. That's way more than I asked for. I appreciate it wholeheartedly :O
Oddly, you never really answered what I did want to know ;) My wording wasn't too clear since I was kind of stumbling around in the dark, but my question now, is where does this script go? what directory do I have to put it in, to make it show up as an export option.
Also, will it replace the existing bvh exporter, or add an additional bvh exporter with the hip offset changes ?
And lastly, I'd assume so given that it's posted in a publicly viewable forum, but do you mind if I distribute this? freely, and with full credit to you, of course : )
It was never meant only for personal use, but rather an idea that came about from a few animators complaining in unison. I got kind of elected to go find a solution for the community.

Quote - If the hip x,y,z translation values were doubled just prior to using the Poser BVH export would that produce the correct result in SL?
If so then that is easily scripted.
Yes, exactly. Everything works fine if I manually double those values, for every keyframe, in every animation.
It's just a lot of annoying work and I'm looking for a way to reduce that. Not to mention that doubling the translations in poser kind of looks silly and ruins the visual guide of the thing.
Is it possible to modify an existing exporter? could you point me to the script I'd have to edit. or if not, explain roughly what else I'd have to do to make this work.  I'd like to give it a shot myself, though I may end up hiring someone to code it if it seems too bothersome.
Thread: Hand movements when toggling IK | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
What version of poser are you on? I have v7.0.0.63
maybe it's a bug that was resolved in another version or somesuch..
Also, those pages look quite helpful, thanks. but I actually knew pretty much everything there, having already figured it out by trial and error. IK is so annoying to use :(
I'm not really new to this, been using poser for over a year. Just that the hand movement issue I'm mentioning has finally become too annoying to not at least try to solve it. It's not actually a distortion. The wrist joint simply rotates when I turn IK off on a hand. Exactly how it rotates seems to vary based on something I can't discern, but the most common movement is a 80 degree bend backwards. (80 degrees because I "Use Limits" and that's as far as it can bend back)
My issue is easy enough to work around, at least. I simply set a pose dot while IK is on, and then reapply that after turning it off. But the frustrating thing is that the hand motion occurs in every keyframe for that hand, so the ease of working around it scales inversely with the length and complexity of the animation. And becomes extremely frustrating if I have more than 9 different poses for that hand in the anim.

This is the figure I'm using. Is there something specifically wrong with it that causes this? how can I fix it ?

The figure I'm using is the Second Life avatar. I'm afraid I don't know enough to understand why the figure might be causing it.
Thread: Transferring animation layers between files | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Oh, nevermind. I opened poser, went back and tried it again, having done nothing different. This time it worked fine.
hooray for inconsistency
Thread: Help, I messed up the scale in the keyframe viewer | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
The whole layers system is screwed? That's a glowing endorsement of the product..
I did ask about it here once, and nobody seemed to have any clue how it works. So I've been sort of blundering my way through it, getting some limited sucess and confusing results
Thread: Help, I messed up the scale in the keyframe viewer | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Nope, it's not permanant. Restarting poser fixed it, even on the same file.
But any idea what could have caused it? i was messing around with layers, and the frame count of the animation.

ctrl+c and ctrl+v didn't seem to do anything. They were the first things I tried, of course
alt+click+drag seems to work great though, thanks

It says that "deletes glitchy keyframes" . That's not at all what I'm looking for :/
All of the keyframes are necessary, I don't want to delete any. It contains a lot of precise movements. I just want to add more interpolated frames between them. I'm well aware this will make the animation both longer and slower, that's the intention.
Thread: Getting what I see? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
That's an awesome idea, les. Thank you.
Something like that will kind of inhibit farther editing though, so I guess I'll have to do that just before exporting.

Someojne told me using translate on body parts is a very bad idea.....
Can yuo expain more about breaking splines? I know how to do that, but I'm not sure which parts it should be done to
