I wonder how many Poser 9/Pro 2012 copies did Brian Howell cold, un-empathic post sell .
Probably the idea behind the whole operation was, following Lincoln quote (You can fool some of the people...) to find a batch of new customers having already planned to lose some of old ones. Will balance be positive or not? it is for posterity to judge.

Really? the blog entry dates February 2nd 2012; probably his earlier work was posted not the most recent results (which are the jaw dropping thing).

From the February 5th Blender meeting notes:
...minor roll of drums...
Blender 2.62 is hours away from the Release Candidate: among other things, it brings the Carve library to handle booleans. This library is faster and better the previous booleans and, among other features, handles nicely ngons which brings us to...
...major roll of drums...
Quote - BMesh: is near final now! Campbell committed last big hurdle, for particle/hair support.
- Proposal: the next 2.63 release gets an exclusive BMesh-focus, other work should be done respecting it, or wait for 2.64 (especially bigger features that need testing time).
Once BMesh is in trunk, we could move to BCon3 immediate (testing/fixing period, no new features added) and release 2.63 in less than two months.
Putting together ngons and booleans, in a few weeks Blender will be capable of handling a totally different modeling workflow from the past, very similar to the one of Wings3D/SketchUp.
In addition, BMesh is the precodition for many enhancements currently on hold, both for hard surface and organic modeling tasks.
This is a ground shaking announcement: when you download the new version of a program and, to all practical purpose, find yourself with a brand new application capable of functionalities which in the past you could only dream of.
Bye.

The problem is autumn never-again-sales irrevocable resolution which made people bite the bullet and buy stuff at whatever price it was (I read a pair of heart wrenching stories in DAZ forums). Now, the irrevocable resolution has been revoked and people feel shafted (certain behaviours are expected by politicians of every side, not by firms).
But this is not the worst thing. The worst thing is that DAZ management sent a very loud message to customers: "Never buy at release, always wait for sales" which, in the future will mean that new products will have disappointing (to say the least) sales and that they will have then to be discounted to sell. All this means reduced and delayed cash flow for DAZ with the final result of diminishing financial resources for the development of Studio and Carrara (something Studio and Carrara users should worry about).
If they want to go the give-away-the-razor-sell-the-blades approach, they'd better say it officially remembering that it is a one-way route: once you go that way, you cannot back up. As it is now it is simply a PR mess.
Now I attribute the "ground shaking" propaganda to limited experience of the new CEO and CMO to the world of computer graphics. In this field every major release of major application is followed by wows! gasps! and whatsoever. The speed of technological improvement is tremendous and customers expect it; anything not amazing is received with meh? comments. Ground shaking is an even higher target; probably only the make-art button would have qualified for it.

I don't understand the hate towards wikis. A wiki can be a very professional way of documenting a project; for examples, see Blender wiki which goes from the program license to how to compile the program with everything in between.
The problem is not the medium (a book in PDF form, like Poser or Vue) or a wiki (like Blender) the problem is whether there is the documentation or not. A hint from a programmer with 25 years of experience: documentation has to be written every day a bit. The recipy I recommend is the last hour of work of the day, writing the user manual, the reference manual and the code documentation with tools like Doxygen. At the end of the project, you have tons of material. I remember the documentation that DEC provided for their computers (the VAX'es, "mine" was a 780, google for pictures to have an idea of what it was): imagine a bookcase, full of three ring binders books, as big as a big wardrobe. And that was only the documentation of the VMS, not the hardware documentation of the computer...
Another important tool is having an up to date FAQ compiled from users questions.
For this kind of programs, which are by definition very visual, lots of video tutorials are vital. For example, 80% I learned about Vue came from the huge library of video tutorials by Geek At Play. For Blender, the source that made me finally tame the beast was Gryllus.net Blender 3D Design Course.
DAZ move was utterly ill conceived and clumsy. The hype preceeding it was completely misguided and overblown. An example of what I would have done: I would offered a 100$ coupon for old customers, a 200$ coupon for newcomers, a free 3 months Platinum club membership to non PC members and a 4 months extension to current members. Coupled with March Madness, new customers would have been able to to get on the Studio 4/Genesis wagon for free while old timers could have trimmed their wish lists. Everybody would have had new toys and early adopters wouldn't have felt cheated.
And last, the real bombs:
1 - the announcement of dropping of the CMS;
2 - the availabily of ZIPs for distribution of products (if it is good enough for Renderosity, Content Paradise, RuntimeDNA, Cornocopia3D, The3DStudio, TurboSquid etc. etc. etc. it can be good enough also for DAZ);
3 - ...reinstatement of posting rights to banned people (for reference, read books like Sun Tzu's Art of War or 36 Stratagems, especially the one named "In order to capture, one must let loose").
Bye.

Quote - Well, whatever their goal is, good luck to them. We need more 3D sites, not less.
Now, imagining if the shoe were on the other foot... If Smith Micro announced that Poser Pro 2012 ($499 list, $299 at Amazon is the cheapest legit source I can find) were now absolutely free, I would feel a bit nervous about my platform of choice. Â Never mind how I would feel if I shelled out for it 31 days ago, could now get it free, and could not get my money back.
A comparison with Vue.
You shell 100s of $ (actually ~1000) to get Vue Infinite. You are OK with it, you use it, you enjoy it.
One day, E-On announces a game changing move. Vue Infinite free for 30 days to everybody.
A part of the money you spent goes down the drain (not all because you used the program so some amortization took place), but this is not the worst. The product itself is debased in the view of the customers and the firm taught the customers a deadly lesson (wait and see, when one of the cornerstones of marketing is preventing potential customer from thinking "do I really need it?"). Less sales/sales with discounts -> less cash flow for E-On -> less E-On capability of sustaining development -> cloudy (to say the least) Vue Infinite future.
Interstingly, Carrara was not part of the butchery. I don't know how to interpret this (and actually I have better things to do).
As last note, over DAZ, there is a thread of fuming customer asking for refunds (or at least there was last time I checked). I imagine it will be deleted soon (not DAZ soon, Oxford dictionary soon).
Bye.
P.S.: b.t.w., just a few months ago DAZ officials notified a draconian "never again sales" policy. I am positive that their and mine interpretation of "never" is radically different. For me, never means not in this life; we can talk about it again (maybe) in my next reincarnation.

The only thing that has a faint, very faint, interest is Bryce because it could be used to export freebies in OBP format. I write could because in the past I never managed to do so; considering that Blender is getting top notch booleans thru Carve library I am wondering if downloading and installing Bryce is worth the effort.
B.t.w., now that the thing is officially irrelevant to Poser and Poser users, this thread is utterly off topic.

For one month Studio 4 free plus two dead and rotting programs. Wow. Just wow.
Now I know the reason for the two significant earthquakes we had in northern Italy in the least few days: they were omens (currently there is on TV a rerun of Supernatural and I am enjoying it a lot; for once, we are out of police stations, morgues and courtrooms).
Bye.
P.S.: the final score is an unqualifed fail for everybody. Nobody did even get near the correct answer. Surely not the evil critters who salivated dreaming of Poser death.
P.P.S.: yet another slap in the face of DAZ "loyal followers" who shelled money for these programs. Great marketing: teaching people that if they wait they will get stuff for free. A sure recipy to dwarf Apple economic results.

Quote - Even if so, it may not end up being a big deal in Poser-verse if SM has to rebuild Poser for Daz' big news to matter to us.
Something that SM has alreay said (and repeated) that they are not going to do.
Talking about something that does exist, Blender 2.62 is days from the candidate release. In this version, among the goodies, Cycles render passes and booleans done using Carve library (read Blender becomes really capabable of CSG modeling). BMesh work continues (target still 2.63 - 2.64).

Anyway, since they are late, it means that it is something they are managing themselves and this puts more steam (?!?!) to the cloud hypothesis and less to a merger.
