I am very impressed with him, as well. I think you're dead-on with your intent to keep the mesh simple and build the character through morphs. Provided that there's enough geometry to support a variety of morphs, there's really no limit to what can be accomplished for him. I think it will also make the figure more resource-friendly, since the artist can put detail only where he needs it. Can't wait to see more!

I just now figured out what it was... The figure is of course going to be wearing clothes. I'd turned visibility off in the hierarchy for anything that was underneath those clothes. Turns out that when Poser (P5, anyway) exports a figure, all parts that are turned off export without their morphs. As soon as I turned visibility back on and exported again, I got the expected results. Who'd a thunk?

Great character! Once you've created the UV template, ZBrush is an excellent program for texturing him. You can paint your textures directly onto the figure in 3D, and then at the press of a button move the colors that you've created onto the texture. ZBrush handles the pain-in-the-butt process of unwrapping it into 2D, so you don't have to. The attached link will tell you more. Even if you don't have ZBrush yet, you can read through the illustrated PDF to see just how powerful this tool is.Thread: Poll-Best prog. to create morphs | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
My personal favorite is ZBrush, too. It imports OBJ's very nicely, allows masking based on an alpha image or painted on the fly to control your work or hide parts of the mesh (like if you want to get at teeth), offers a X,Y or Z symmetry in either with options for mirroring and radial, and is completely real-time. atom was right when he said that ZBrush turns imported figures to putty -- it's just like working with clay. Very intuitive. There are also no problems with rescaling.

It really depends on what kind of modeling you want to do, and how much mileage you want to get out of the program. Not to mention how much you are willing to spend! As has been mentioned, something like wings3D is great if all you care about is modeling, but the truth is that the model is only about 20% of the final image quality. Texturing plays a huge role, as do lighting and camera angles. Also, some modeling programs are better at different kinds of modeling than others. I personally feel that ZBrush is an excellent choice for a program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, but still offers enough versatile to be a single solution if you need it to be. While it's not really that great for architectural modeling, it is like modeling with clay for organic modeling. And from what has been said by Pixologic, the version that's coming out next month will have even more modeling versatility. But it also has a very nice rendering engine (which is also about to get some form of raytracing) and a kick-butt way of allowing textures to be painted directly onto a model (either native to ZBrush or imported). It also is great for Poser morph target creation. Something worth checking into, anyway. Especially since it has a free demo. I've personally done a lot of work with Poser morphs, texturing and renders.

Thank you for your help, folks! I found out a few things. One was that importing it, sizing, rotating and positioning it, and then exporting it right back out again before doing anything else was a big help in several different ways. In addition, I was making a big error: I had a "body" group. Once I changed that, it worked great. The answers were finally found at posertech.com. That info, coupled especially with Ajax's info saved the day. Thanks!

Yes, Spike. That would have been page 7 of the current 3D Graphics World. Good eye! My first piece ever to have been published, so I was pretty stoked. :)
