I've had similar experiences in Windows 7 (Win 7 professional, 32 bit, SP1) when the mouse goes over the bar at the bottom of the window- Windoze thinks I want to select another program, so it helpfully minimizes the one I was working with. I haven't seen it any time that the mouse is not at the bottom of the screen.

After these two long, well-written replies I'm almost embarassed to suggest this, but simply watching CSI, Bones and similar shows will give you a decent grounding in the current crime-detecting technologies and methods.
