Might want to try two solid objects of the same mesh, with one smaller inside, other surrounding the other. The top layer have glass and slightly beneath the other object use the solid material. Then add a some lighting.

I usually try to look at the moutainous areas and do a quick preview render.
Then spin the terrain till i get it where i want it :)
