No, they didn't offer a download. I didn't expect one, really. I only wish dad had access to the PDF manual, so I could be reading up on it while waiting for the delivery. 

I paid $199. No tax and no shipping charges. My state doesn't require tax on online orders outside the state.

I'm using Poser Pro on a Mac, so I'm not sure about the trouble you are having with Render to Background. Perhaps it's got something to do with Vista 64 and its security permissions? I would just contact Smith Micro support and see if they can help you. All the previous owners of Poser have been very helpful to me with support.

 When I bought it, I took them up on their offer to get the Space Navigator 3D mouse for $59. BEST $59 I ever spent! It makes working in Poser SO natural and intuitive!!

 If you already own Poser6 or Poser7, you can side-grade to Poser Pro for $249. They had a special for $199 until 8/31/2008, but unless they extended that offer again, the normal upgrade price is $249.

 Also, another great feature is the Network Rendering feature. If you do animation work, then you can put your old PC's or Mac's to work rendering frames for you to get your work done faster!

In my opinion, Poser Pro is JUST if not MORE stable than Poser 7, and Poser 7 was pretty good!

 If I were you, I would just manually copy the files or Runtime from your (I can't remember the exact path the old OS 9 installer used) OS9 Applications folder where Poser Pro Pack was originally installed, to your new Runtime in your Applications/Poser6/Runtime folder.  The problem is that DAZ never updated the old installers to use an OSX compatible installer. 

Also, you could try just adding a new Runtime in Poser6 and point it to your old Poser Pro Pack runtime.

Also, if you can run your Mac in Classic Mode, you could always just change the file path in the installer to install it in your Applications/Poser6/ folder instead of the default path.

It's been my experience that turning off IK for both the figure and the object in question (boots in my case) seemed to fix the problem.  Ultimately, becasue it was impractical to always have IK turned off, I think I ended up offsetting the geometry for the boots before bringing into the Setup Room and rigging it by attaching the boots to the figures skeleton to compensate for the shift. 

There probably was a logical explanation for the behavior, but I just decided to work around it.
