Thanks, this is what I have been hearing everywhere I look. I had been told that the RPF files out of 3D Studio Max were the best but then I found someone having the same problems using 3DStudio.

Quote - Gotcha. DOF from gBuffers is always a mixed bag. It's very tough to do well because there is always a little sharpness "bleed" since it's not real. There are a couple of good (spendy) solutions out there if you don't like the way the internal AE system is handling it. I can track down the address if you like.
For this type of post, I always use Shake.
Thanks, any links would be great!

I think there is a misunderstanding. The depth of field effect is being applied in After Effects, not in Carrara. There is a 3D Effect in After Effects that takes the z-depth of the RPF file and can dynamically change the DOF with a slider. This works except it seems like the g-buffer layers of the RPF file are not matched up exactly.

I actually could not duplicate the effect in the tutorial using the spine editor. I eventually used a bunch of metaball particle emitters moving along a motion path to come close to recreating the effect.

Thanks for the quick reply Mark. I was using the Translation method so I switched to Pipeline. What is the difference between the two? Also, I can't seem to find the cross section rotation options anywhere. I see some cross section options but they don't mention rotation.
Thanks,

Thread: Carrara 6 Pro Plugin for After Effects | Forum: Carrara
Thanks for the replies, I had read that post in the daz forums and checked the bug tracker but it only says it doesn't work for CS3 on the Mac. I have a PC so I am hoping that is a different situation.

Thread: Glass shader causes blotches in GI Render - anyone know why? | Forum: Carrara
I don' t know if this is the case with Carrara but in another 3D program I have (Shade) if two objects are overlaping it causes rendering errors when using global illumination. I noticed that the walls and ceiling in this Carrara file are overlaping separate peices. Maybe if you used boolean operations to weld them all together it would take away the blotches.

Quote - Also, I would like to know if its possible to render a seperate distance mask, one that I could manipulate in a 2d program, rather than use the depth of field feature w/ the camera. Far too many times does my focus area gets blurred, Id like a little more control, dont quite get the look I want when done inside C5pro...
Under the render settings you can choose the image/movie output file format under the tab marked "Output". If you choose the Photoshop option from the drop-down box you can then select from the "G-Buffers" menu things like surface coordinates or 3D position that will show up as separate channels in programs like Photoshop or The Gimp.

Thread: UV mapping problem | Forum: Carrara
Sorry for the late reply, unchecking the Wrap UV was what fixed the problem. Also, I see what you mean by the framing option. Here is what has kept my from posting a reply:

Thread: Bubble shader | Forum: Carrara
Edit: Ok, I just saw Mark's and its a billion times better than mine!! Also, I don't seem to have a "Fake Fresnal" option, is that from a plugin?
I don't know about other versions of Carrara but I am using v5 and it come with a bubble shader under the miscelaneous shader section. I didn't like it though so I modified it a little by adding an alpha channel with a cellular setting. Also I lowered the reflection alot. This is what I got.

Quote - I've also asked for the real numbers and assumptions on some of Carrara's functions. The developers have not been forthcoming.
That is unfortunate, perhaps it is because the physics engine just isn't that accurate. I don't know why they wouldn't let you know otherwise.
