I always uncheck Limit OpenGL Polygons and Maintain Instant Draw frame rate. Helps in big scenes and resources start to drop. Also helps if your display has a tendency to turn objects into boxes.

PaganArtist,
Be sure you are running Vue 6.5 or higher - it's a posted requirement at the Store.

When I installed Infinite on my Vista 64 Ultimate laptop, I created a directory called C:Vue and installed the program there with no problems. My content is in C:Vue-Content. Having no problem with that either.

You might also try the Absolute offset from surface setting in the material editor. You will probably have to play around a bit to get the effect you want but you can get objects hovering above ground this way

Try moving your Instant draw and Background draw sliders way over to the left.
Also, uncheck Maintain instant draw frame rate and Limit OpenGL polygons.
That will help your display.

A fellow I shared an office with for years was a Gamer - he lived for it. When I got interested in Vue, he would bring in books and magazines about the games so that I could see the artwork and I was fascinated and amazed. The talent displayed in creating those imaginary worlds was awesome. If I was younger, that is a field I would have loved to go in to.
