It's been a while since I posted in the Bryce forum. I still teach Bryce to my middle school students but I've been learning Maya on my own for about two years now. To master the program takes some serious dedication, time and, yes, money if you wish to go the path of purchasing tutorial DVD's. The program is just to vast to learn on your own by using the written word alone(over time I have acquired about two dozen Gnomon tutorials). And as DVD MASTER stated, you can use MEL to script just about any type of effect or tool set that you may require. If you have a need for an ongoing new challenge. . . . Maya can keep you going for a very long time!

I totally agree. . . If a technique works. . . use it! To paint the buttons, I adjusted the brush size and gray intensity and manually just gave a click on each recessed area. . . . 10 seconds maybe. I could have also just included the button elements in the original dimpled PS file for better control to achieve the same effect.

Just a little hint. . . . Instead of moving the little red dot up and down to control the painted grey level. . . . Try holding down the spacebar while moving the mouse around in the editing window. When you find the level that you need . . .release the mouse button.

Hmmmmm . . . Now you guys got me thinking about changing the walkway texture and ambient intensity. That's why additional input is always good. . . it gets you thinking! lunartick- I have never downloaded any models to use in my images. I create all of my models from scratch. . . in this case in Bryce. The textures are photo composites in PS using several reference picts.

Yes, in today's technological world people are exposed to art that might not have ever thought to try "art". However, it seems as if the emphasis, in a constantly evolving digital design world, is mostly placed upon mastering the software(s) of choice. Learning tool and parameter uses does help to develop an individual's problem solving skills. However, an artist also needs an indepth understanding of the traditional art principals that are associated with designing and organizing compositional structure and themes within images. This knowledge will truly heighten an artist's ability to create the best images possible. FYI - Here is a link that was posted a while ago that explains basic " Landscape Composition Rules". Hope that the info is useful!Thread: Bryce Best Software | Forum: Bryce
Pirate1- Pogmahone is indeed wise. Start out by using an inexpensive app and then, if necessary, upgrade to one of the higher end packages. I have used Bryce for at least 8 years and about a year ago began to learn Maya using the PLE version. Bryce helped me to establish a sound foundation in the 3d world of modeling and texturing and provided a user friendly environment. I currently am employed as a graphic design instructor and Bryce is the cornerstone of the curriculum. Through Bryce you can sharpen both your AI and PS skills by creating textures and gray/height images to be used with the Bryce Terrain Editor!! (My all time favorite 3d tool!).

Erlik, Maya also has tools for drawing CV, EP and pencil curves. I just like to use AI for some quick line designs. . .a habit that I developed from using the Bryce terrain editor. But you are correct about it all being pretty much the same! And I am certain that all of us.. . no matter what app we are using. . . . enjoy every minute of it!
