I understand that. I guess what I mean is that I would like to see it become more of a standardization amongst figures to allow for more squash and stretch. You can do something akin to that with Poser by altering the rigs (especially by altering the IK setup, and incorporating the chest/head), but I've never seen it work like it really should. That is to say, the little bit of experimenting that I have done with it has not been all that promising. If I am going to do all that work to alter a rig, I'll just rig it properly in Maya. However, my guess is that if Poser characters were setup like more professional rigs, Poser would enjoy a new appeal to a larger user base.
I have the same complaint about the lack of keyframe handles in Poser for animation. Once you work with them, you never want to do without them. sigh In the end, it's really just a different program. So close...and yet so far.

How about allowing users to turn off rooms that aren't being used (like the Setup Room, Face Room, Dynamics rooms) when they're not being used so that they don't keep eating up system resources?! I think most users would find that this would increase the speed of the application in about 70% of neccessary renders.
Now that I've said that, I know a bunch of people are going to come out of the woodwork to say that they use all of those rooms all the time...and I'm glad for anyone that makes use of them...I'm just saying that for the majority of my work, and much of the work I see posted, I don't see those rooms getting the kind of use that warrants leaving them on "all the time" whenever the application is in use. I'm in favor of being able to turn them on/off whenever they're needed...like a plugin architecture.
Hope this makes some kind of sense.

Sorry for the late reply., but thanks for the render test Ockham! That was about what I figured...and what all of my render tests between ProPack and Poser6 have also found. It's scary that Poser7 is even slower. Once again, I'm still left wondering where is the imrovement in performance?
Well, it looks like SR1 won't be neccessary because I still will not be purchasing Poser7.
Glad to see that I'm not the only one with three different versions of Poser on their hard drive. I wonder how many others out there also have multiple versions loaded? :p
Anyway, thanks again!Â

Can anyone with Propack and Poser7 do a quick render test with the P4 rendering engine? I'd really like a time comparison between renders. The scene doesn't have to be anything elaborate, just a quick figure render for comparison on how long Poser 7 takes to render 1 frame vs. Poser Pro Pack. (Should I start a new thread for this?)
I've had several people tell me how much faster Poser7 is than any of it's predecessors, and I'm interested to see if this is true...especially after this service release.
Thx!

Thanks Xeno, that was what I meant. Wow, P7 will render a scene for you as fast as P4?! I've got Propack, P5 and P6 all loaded onto my computer...and when I take a scene and render it in Propack (p4) it will take - let's say 32 seconds as an example - then when I try to render it in P5 (using the P4 rendering engine) it will take well over a minute...and P6 is almost always dead on to take twice as long - like 64 seconds (Again, using the P4 rendering engine). If there's some trick to getting my 3.2 Ghz Pentium4 with 2 gigs of ram to get rendering speeds lower with Poser5+ versions, I'd love to hear it.
I can't speak to whether Poser7 is actually faster or not when it comes to using the P4 rendering engine within P7...I've heard a lot of people claim that it is...but whenever I've asked someone to test it for me (even against Poser6) it seems that render times have either not changed, they are even slower, or those that I ask don't seem to get back to me. For this reason I have not, nor do I intend to purchase Poser7
I've talked to a lot of people that don't seem to think this is a big deal...but as an animator, doubling render times with newer versions is a BIG DEAL. Instead of a clip taking 2 hours to render, I'm now looking at 4+ if I choose to use Poser 5, 6, or - I imagine - 7. Now if I were just rendering single-frame images of Naked Vicki in a Temple...well I could care less about rendering speeds.
It just seems to me that if I have to keep Propack, P5, AND P6 all loaded onto my computer to get the results I need...well the upgrades just don't strike me as sufficient. I'm surprised more people don't feel the same way...but everyone is entitled to their opinions. Unfortunately, it seems that nothing is going to happen with render speeds unless I start vocalizing my own though. Maybe someone at EF will finally get the message, and fix the problem with Poser8 so that I can FINALLY drop Propack into the recycling bin, God willing.
Again, sorry for the rant, I just don't think Poser7 looks like enough incentive to warrant another upgrade. I've listed my primary reasons, but I'll also say that the new features listed on the EF website did nothing to encourage my decision. As a matter of fact, I nearly turned red in the face when I saw that they added the Talk-Designer into Poser7 - something I consider to be completely unneccessary, and if it works anything like all the other "rooms" in Poser, will just eat up more system resources (whether I use it or not) in an attempt to undermine Daz as a competitor. It just strikes me as petty.
All that being said, I don't have a problem if EF adds new stuff with newer versions of Poser. Hell, I love dynamic cloth, hair, etc. But not every scene I make demands that I use it...so why can't I turn it off when I'm not using it? Or the Face Room? Or the Setup Room? These are the things that slow Poser down to a crawl...at least for me. I'm just saying, I want the option to turn them off so that Poser can run more efficiently without being drained of system resources by these things when I don't need them.
Now, before anyone tells me that Poser7 renders twices as fast as Poser4 (Or I actually use ProPack), I ask you to do a few render tests. And is there ANYONE who wouldn't like the option of "Turning off" these extra features/rooms when you don't need them? Until these things get some work done to them, my advice is not to upgrade.
Anyway, sorry for the coninued rant. I really don't mean to be Mr. Negativity here. I love Poser, I really do...I just think that it could be so much more than it is, and I was really disappointed when I saw what was being offered with Poser7. Hope this helps to at least spur the conversation in some constructive ways.

I won't buy another version until the P4 rendering engine is as fast as it was with P4 and Pro Pack. Posers 5 and 6 both take twice as long ro render (and that's with the quick P4 rendering engine...I'm not even talking about Firefly - though I would expect that to take longer). Anything else - IMHO - is simply not an improvement if the base program runs like a slug. Sorry for the rant ;)

Thread: Poser 7 the resorce hog. What kind of pc do you need for this program? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
*"How can you be sure it hasn't happened with Poser 7 if you don't try it?"
Can anyone with Poser6 and Poser7 both installed help me out here? Can you take the same file (preferrably a V3 with a bikini, some hair, and maybe a few props - nothing fancy) and render it using the P4 rendering engine in both programs, and tell me if Poser7 can do it in half the time? Or even close?
Seriously, if anyone here can testify that the answer is an "honest" yes, then I'll eat my words and head on over to EF and place an order today. I'd actually like nothing better :)
I'm actually really interested in hearing the results others have had. At this point there's no need for computer specs since the comparison is only between 2 versions of the same program on the same computer (actually, if anyone has P4, Propack, or P5 installed, I'd be interested in comparing those with Poser7 as well). I'd like to know how long a single framed image takes to render using each version using the P4 rendering engine? (with all the options turned on - shadows, antialiasing, etc.)  ...and of course, it wouldn't hurt to see the image.
Thanks!

For example: Here is an image of Marvel Comic's Tigra. When rendered in Propack, this image took 36 seconds to render, Â Poser5: 1 minute and 4 seconds, Poser6:Â 1 minute and 16 seconds. Now, I understand Poser7 is supposed to be a slight speed improvement over Poser6...but does it cut the time in half (or even close) for a given render?
Back to the matter, it's the same file in each case, I'm not using any dynamics whatsoever, and it's essentially the same rendering engine. So I have to ask, what has changed? The only thing I can figure out is that the additional pull on system resources from Poser's newer features has bogged the program down. Keep in mind, I'm not saying they should do away with these features. I like them enough...but I want to turn them off and render at a speed that is at least in the ballpark of Propack with the P4 rendering engine. I'm mostly an animator, so when we talk about doubling render times in seconds or minutes for a single image...we're talking about hours or even days when it comes to animation.
It is a dream of mine to one day delete Propack from my computer, and carry on with a newer version of Poser. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen with Poser 7, or with any other version that I'll shell good money out for before EF recognizes the need for better system resource management. On the other side of that, I'd be willing to pay quite a bit more for a version of the program that let me do just that. Perhaps there is a need for a Poser Professional version of the program and Poser Hobbyist version?
Thread: Poser 7 the resorce hog. What kind of pc do you need for this program? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I've been saying this for a long time...Poser users NEED to be able to "turn off" certrain aspects of the program. If I'm not using dynamic cloth in a scene...then why do I need to eat up valuable system resources by having it running all the time? The same thing goes for dynamic hair...and even the face room should be a seperate application that comes with Poser...not a built in resource eating elephant that never works as well as it should.
It's hard for me to say anything about Poser7. I will not be buying it. I've used Poser since the beginning, but I do not like the direction that it has been going in since version 5 (though I did buy P5 and P6 hoping for the best). It's a sad commentary on any program that I need to have Propack, P5, and P6 all loaded onto my computer to support the varying needs of rendering. Most of the time I still use Propack because the rendering speeds are about 1/3 that of P6. Granted, that's only using the P4 rendering engine...but my point still remains: All of these dynamic bells and whistles are great...and even neccessary to be competitive in the 3d market...but to have them all running at the same time without the option of turning them off is just silly. And adding things that most people already have like a talk-designer (AKA Mimic) seems much more like a jab at the competition at the cost of it's users' resources than the addition of a useful tool.
these things make the program run like a slug, and it ruins the usefulness of an otherwise exquisite tool.
Don't get me wrong here. Poser IS COOL. And in the right hands, there is no reason why it can't be a professional tool. I've both seen and done enough work with it to know...but EF has to do a better job with understanding system resource management before it will ever transcend the boundaries of being a toy program and take it's place as an incredibly useful tool for hobbyist and professional alike. Until then, I'm afraid it won't make any difference if you have a system with dual multi-core processors and 8 gigs of ram. The next version of Poser will just find a way to eat that up uselessly too.
My apologies for jumping in to vent here. It's just been a very frustrating slide from P4 to P6...and now to see that the issue of system resource management continues with P7 makes me very sad.
Anyway, onto happier things...
Thread: Has there ever been a full length movie made with Poser content? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I'm working on a full length feature film using Poser. I have just over 1/2 hour of it complete, but I'm currently taking a break for a year or two while my kids are little (yes yes, I know that a year or two is an eternity in the 3d world - but it's what life demands at the moment). I actually can't wait to get back to it...but right now getting 5 minutes in front of the computer is an accomplishment, let alone the hours I need to work with Poser.
This project has actually been a huge undertaking. It took about 3 or 4 months to get the script right, and then casting took a while. Getting the voices truly is one of the greater challenges. People from all over the US have been working on this with me. Right now, I have about 80% of the voices recorded. All of the main characters are taken care of, with the exception of one character that I think I'm going to have to re-record because the audio quality is lousy. Luckily, the bulk of that character's lines occur in the second half of the film. The rest we're recording as we go.
Anyway, you can download an excerpt from it in DIVX format (14mb) here: KitchenScene.avi
Hope you like it

Thread: Hair Suggestions? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Yeah, it's those longer render times that always get me down...
I actually prefer conforming hair to anything when it's done well. I'm not a big fan of Poser's dynamic hair anyway...It's resource hungry, and rarely looks natural. I'd rather take a step up and go to Max or Maya if I want dynamic hair.
