Thread: Stormy Sea with Heavy Rain | Forum: Vue
Hi,
I just happened to see your query and possibly can give you some places to start. An excellent resource in my opinion if you are going to do ocean scenes is Monsoon's excellent SeaVue package available at Cornucopia3d. I think it's a mst have. Also, Wabe's Bad weather collection of alpha planes are great for rain. Check them out also, worth the price.
Ok, now for the realistic news. It takes a bit of trial and error to get what you want for your own vision. There are wave terrrain maps also included in Monsoon's package so you can also make your own besides the included ocean terrains which are terrific. Wabe's alpha planes and fog are great but can increase the render times considerably if you overdo them. I usually use them carefully and then augment both the rain and fog with postwork. For postwork, look up Deviney's photoshop brushes. I think they are on Daz3d. They offer you a lot of excellent control. I don't use all of them all the time and have developed my own terrrains and weather through trial and error. Every situation calls for a different technique.
If you would like to see how I've done some rough weather ocean scenes, check out my gallery (steelrazer). a couple that come to mind are http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2427438&user_id=3156&np&np , and http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2322769&user_id=3156&np&np , or http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2286616&user_id=3156&np&np .
I hope these help a bit. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Peace and good health,
Â

thanks bagginsbill....and no, your answer was not ass-holish, but i got your drift.
i will try to find some time to post some screen shots and/or settings info so that i can get the problem across, and, yes i have been to the material room swimming hole infrequently and amateurishly.
one note though....i used the same mask on the same model in Vue, and it worked perfectly, so i at least know that the model/mesh areas that i want to renderer invisible are the ones that i blacked out.
i really do appreciate the help, and i'll try to make it easier to get where i am with this. my temptation is to bypass the problem, since i got it to work fine in Vue, but i know it will come up again in poser, and i hate "not knowing" something that seems like it might be simply solved.
thanks....

thanks for the screen shot. i can see how it is set up. as far as i can tell, my setup is the same...maybe it's because the model is more complex?
i will mess with it and if i come up with a solution, i'll post it....for now, i'm totally mystified. i still can't figure out why areas not masked in the transparency mask would be affected by the transparency setting...when i remove the mask...everything returns to normal...i even double checked to see if my black and white settings in the mask were absolute white and black.
it is a puzzlement.
thanks for your input and suggestions though, it does tell me what should be working...now to find out why it's not.

IsaoShi....i inverted the black and white because i was not getting the expected result from the black for invisible items and i wanted to see if that made a difference. it did, but in a totally unexpected way. i was just trying to see what difference that would make.
i tried hborre's suggestions, and this was my result.... the expected areas became invisible, but so did othere odd parts of the model that were not included in the black area. also, the underside of the model, has a grey neutral texture and parts of the underside became invisible also (again, not included in the black area of the trans map, but grey on the spec map and tex map. i set all the dials as suggested and pretty much unexpected results followed.
it's frustrating, because it seems as though it should be simple according to everything that i've read, but it does not seem to pan out that way which makes me think that i am missing some basic point (or that i may be going insane).

"organized clutter"...that's what i was claiming, but it never seems to sound believable... and i'm writing down the phrase "inspirational stuff" for the next time someone suggests that i might get more done if i clean the studio up. but, it is a very good place to work!

thanx for all your quick responses to my question. i had to go do some work in the real 3d world and after about an hour and a half when i came back to my scene, the previews had all loaded up sans exclamations... the significant lag might have had something to do with my open programs...firefox, photoshop and bridge, Xnview, poser, vue 6 infinite, and adobe reader.
i have to say that i'm absolutely amazed at not only the work done here, but also the comaraderie and friendly sharing...i've been a member since 1999 or so, and this is the place to come!
again, thank you all

Thread: poser 4 memory allocation | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
thanx for your replies. i do recall seeing a message once about "try allocating more memory to poser", but apparently that is a "for mac" response. poser's response to not finding a geometry file sounds like "i didn't do it, it must be your memory." anyway, i installed the update and will see how it goes. my other question was about the libraries....is there a limitation to how many items you can have in a library...POSES for instance seems to fill up pretty fast with entries and then the program will not access files after a certain amount. is this something to learn to live with? thanks steelrazer

bobbie.... yes i did (download and install the update just today)....saw the same message. but you did answer my question i think....the program does the allocation on windows, unlike mac os. thanks for taking the time to respond! i truly appreciate it! very best regards steelrazer
