ok so many times i see models created in cg look so cg one of the things i think would be cool is to find these things here discuss them and compile some cures the first that comes to my mind is Symetry (sp) more models are ruined by this than any other thing (besides lighting ) I thought it would be a cool project to get everyone to find a pic of a girl or guy that you find atractive and split it up into a 4 photo shoot origional mirrored side Left an Right and one in which you alter the symetry yourself from a mirrored image heres one example from me Also in the end it would be cool to take the one atractive feature from your image and seperate it off be it the nose ear eye etc and we will make some images from it in the end to see how a object that is buetiful on one face may change on another I hope to get some good feed back on this thread in the end i may do a tutorial on head modeling wiht the templates we create !

another as well

i'm down with this trav....alot of people don't realize that nothing in nature is TRUELY symetrical....alot of the times with just model half of a figure then BOOM mirror it...and call it finished...and while the end product might look great...it always seems un-natural somehow..part of that reason is symetry...i saw a program on TLC awhile ago that spoke about symetry (for some reason) and how we as humans tend to "gravitate" towards the more symetrical faces and think of them as beautiful...they showed a little example of then president clinton...and how his face was more symetrical than...who was it that ran against him?...get the point? ;)...but yeah...i'll join in this thread in a bit with a "symetrized" face or two...and what do ya mean by alter the symetry yourself?...position the "mirror" to where you think it looks good and makes a good face?

wgreenlee1 posted Thu, 19 December 2002 at 4:03 AM

I hear ya travis.. Well you can mirror it all you want its the final touches where you go and "smudge up" the other side a little... sorta like in photoshop where you just push and pull those pixels around a little the same applys here in modeling, organic modeling to say. Once you get the main object done mess it up a little to give it that "touch".

wolfshade posted Thu, 19 December 2002 at 5:08 AM

well this is just a lil something i threw together...a few different faces the original/mirrored left/mirrored right

volk23 posted Thu, 19 December 2002 at 8:39 AM

holly crap, i didnt even know that a face would change so much if you would do that, cool !

Spike you look REALLY pissed in that second pic :)

TRAVISB posted Thu, 19 December 2002 at 8:35 PM

haha very cool isnt it thats a damn clear pic spike and as was mentioned you seem to have a pretty syemtrical face ! lucky you hahahh a ! keep them coming this is fun !

Virus posted Thu, 19 December 2002 at 11:45 PM

Good one, I agreed with the comments that nothing in the nature (organic) is simetrcal perfect, that's why I use to make my own morphs for poser characters to give them the chance to not be simetrical :) Love messages like this one. BTW great celebrities examples :) Ahh and Spike you look better at last picture (well from my point of view :)) I have never played this game with my picture but I will do it, I bet I will going to have funny pictures.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Oh thats Spike.........sorry....hehehe

I imagine we're tromping all over copyrights doing this experiment? If so, apologies from me right up front. anyhow, the top image is the unaltered one and the second is the altered one, but the model looks very nearly the same. So, if you put their hair back tho, its not quite as obvious. BT

Spike posted Fri, 20 December 2002 at 2:19 PM

I knew I would get a few of you with that one :)

LOL :) Sorry can't resit it. I got funny pictures of my images mirrowed, my GF was very surprises, how different I could look with a simetrical image. Guess I will keep mine, just because hehehe coof coff, hehehehe :)

different note I guess everyone would agree that aki ross is the ultimate cgi fem character? I took her face and did this to it and she has a symmetrical face. I'd post the pict, but I think I'll dodge the copyright issues on that one..besides, its the raciest picture I could find of her (well you did realize those existed didnt you?..I mean hell, they do of the poser woman so you know final fantasy women do as well) and it might cause kids to pass out...lol nevermind the fact that they lost 104 mil on the picture..that had nothing to do with symmetry..it was the really crappy story line that killed that movie. Too bad tho, it had lotsa potential. BT

TRAVISB posted Sun, 22 December 2002 at 1:35 AM

personaly i thought aki was laking personality big time while the model was technicly good i found her to be a lil boring i prefer alot of stahlbergs still for females over her face but i think there idea wasnt to create a bombshell either

brycetech posted Sun, 22 December 2002 at 1:48 AM

ya ever see some of the early betas of her? in the beginning, they were leaning toward "bombshell"..but she ended up more towards average/realistic in the end. The early models had longer hair/eyelashes and was much softer featurewise. ya reckon that they opted for shorter hair because it took less time to render? That could be an option. It was past her shoulders..so the physics there would have been a nightmare. and yes, the acting of the models wasnt top notch..but then again, we are talking cg and imho, the models were still the best ever made as was the cg movie. still far short of 'realistic' but still a marking point for cg.. in time, animations like those will be as easy as it is to obtain modeling programs. It used to be hard to get them as well as noone even thought of a lot of ram. I can remember being told "You'll never use 32 megs of ram"...lol :) BT

Travis, Years ago in Phoenix a girl I met showed me that trick. She said that each side of the face represented a side of their nature and if you did the mirror trick, you could tell their nature good or evil. I don't know that it's true, but it is kind of neat to play around with. The application to Poser is obvious if we can pull it off. Thanks, - TJ
