Thanks Nerd! I always love your stuff. Just wonderin' tho...how come an installer?

hauksdottir posted Fri, 20 December 2002 at 11:17 PM

Very nice. Santa's elves probably needed a break from rocking horses and robotic transformer toys... :) Thanks! Carolly

I'm testing to see if people will have less trouble when I use an installer. The biggest problem is misplaced files. I hope an installer will solve this. That's probably why DAZ does it that way. If you want manual control just specify a folder outside your poser folder to install to then you can Drag n' Drop as with a zip file. ngsmall02.gif

Spit posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 12:25 AM

Nope. won't run any installers except DAZ and then only grudgingly. Please don't try to start a trend here. Zip only please.

hauksdottir posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 1:44 AM

Even with DAZ I don't let it automatically install. If I place the files, I know what is where. :) Carolly

FYI the installer I use is an "Package for the Web" from InstallShield. It is essentially a self extractor on steroids. It does not alter the registry or create an uninstaller entry. All you lurkers, chime in. I'd (we'd) really like to know if you love, hate or don't care about installers for Poser stuff.

nerd posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 1:57 AM Forum Moderator

Hauksdottir, I guess I'm lazy. I like ZIPs with all the paths so I can dump it right in runtime. I even let DAZ's installer run wild. Spit, if enough people feel that way I'll continue to offer ZIPs. I'd probably continue to offer the installer for us lazy folks.

my $.02... I'm not going to keep paying monthly auto insurance premiums, then stop driving my car because there is a small chance that at the next intersection some malicious idiot will pull out in front of me. On the same note, I'm not going to keep paying upgrade fees to Norton, or anybody else, then not use certain files because there's a small chance that some malicious idiot has put a virus in it. instead, you drive the car, using all of its safety features, being careful of what you're doing, and being wary of what everyone else is doing.... but not so wary that you never get out of the garage. If someone is offering something that I want only in a self-extracting .exe, then I'll grab it, scan the hell out of it, and if that's negative.. run it. Especially from a respected member of this community who has given us numerous quality items in the past. If, after all this, something undesirable is unleashed on your computer, you know who did it and how to find them. Hunt them down and sodomize them with a telephone pole. And restore your system from your backups.... You DO backup, don't you? And, like I said, I'll only follow this philosophy on those 'streets' that I'm somewhat familiar with. Take it 'off-road' and you naturally run a greater risk of damaging your vehicle. sorry... I like analogies. Had a few more... fire/smoke detectors, health insurance, etc... but decided to go with the car.

nerd whichever route you decide to take I'll still download them, your freebies are must-haves in my book :)

FWTempest posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 3:02 AM

oh, yeah... forgot to add that while I was pontificating. As soon as I'm home on my own computer, I'll be at your place to try on your dress, nerd. ;)

Re installers, I only allow the ones from DAZ because I a) trust them. b) know where they live. Otherwise, no I won't allow them. Jack

MarianneR posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 3:16 AM

A pc installer is useless on a mac. Zip, please!

markdc posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 3:26 AM

Please no .exe files.

Spit posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 3:31 AM

Hey, it's not just about malicious stuff ya know. You can PEEK into zip files to see what's there. You have NO clue with .exe's. That's my main beef. How many files do you have that you've forgotten what's in 'em? If it's a zip, just peek inside.

Zenman53186 posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 5:29 AM

I guess I lean toward zip's. I like to know what's in a file, and where it's going. This assumes that the zip was created with subdirectories; zip's without subdirectories defined can be very frustrating.

who3d posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 7:08 AM

For "safety", utility, cross-platform compliance and just general "feeling good" I lean so far towards .ZIP files that I'm lying down already :)

TrekkieGrrrl posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 8:30 AM

Zips are good, but PLEASE properly path'ed zips. Not zips starting anywhere but Runtime and not zips without paths.

Clara says, OK! If you want it zipped. I'll zip it. [![ngsmall02.gif](http://www.nerd3d.com/Banners/ngsmall02.gif)](http://www.nerd3d.com) Are you sure you don't want it unzipped ;-)
