I just got a new computer and I tried to install some of the older versions of Poser on it. Poser 1 seems to work as long as I don't maximize the posing window. Poser 2 and 3 don't see to because of "not enough memory". The problem seems to be too much memory. (The new system has 1 Gb of RAM.) Poser 4 and 5 both seem to work fine. All of the versions seemed to run fine under Windows ME on my old machine. Any ideas how I can get the older versions of Poser to work on my new system?

Try the XP compatibility settings. Right-click on a program's desktop icon, hit Properties. There will be a Compatibility tab. Choose compatible with Win 95 or 98, and always choose Disable Visual Themes. Most older programs will work fine with those settings.

I tried setting the compatibility mode to Windows 95 but still got the memory error. I'll try it again tonight at home. How do choose "Disable Visual Themes"?

This error actually occurs because of too much RAM. Poser 3 was written long before 1GB machines existed, let alone became common. You'll need to upgrade to either P4/PPP or P5.

I changed the compatibility mode to Windows 95 and I checked the "Disable Visual Themes" and it still gave the memory error for both Poser 2 and Poser 3. Nosfiratu, if you reread my original post, it clearly states that Poser 4 and Poser 5 both work fine on my new machine. But, given the complexity of some of the new and radically changed features in Poser 5, I find that I am much more comfortable and productive in earlier versions for some tasks. Eventually I'll be divine the arcane workings of some of the new features like the material room but until then, I'll stick with an interface I can understand to do things like apply transparancy maps. The bottom line is that I simply haven't had the time to learn the new Poser 5 way of doing what had been trivial tasks in pervious versinos of Poser. It is a bummer that I can't run some of the older versions of Poser on a newer computer and operating system. I'm curious how far Poser 3 could have been pushed with better hardware.

jkm,I use to have Poser3 on a machine running XP Home, and the same amount of memory...it worked fine..but I did have the upgrade patch(3.01?),that you can still DL fromCL. For Poser1&2...a little trick, that "sometimes" works with older programs,is as follows:Open the program...open your Task Manager..click on the process tab..then RIGHT click on the program name. You now get a drop down window with an option of "set priority"...you can now set below normal or low for memory useage.Setting low I got an old version of Painter(MetaCreations)to work great.(BTW you need to do this each time you use the program). Hope this helps,SWAMP

SWAMP, I downloaded the patch for Poser 3 and I still get the problem. I also tried the "set priority" stuff you mentioned and that didn't work either. Thanks for the suggestions.
