Hello everybody, I've written a new tutorial that shows how to model a thread for a bolt with the help of the spiral extrusion of the Spline modeller . The english version is here : http://www.chez.com/litst/eng/tut-thread/thread.htm French version here : http://www.chez.com/litst/fr/did_vis/vis.htm I hope you'll like it ! litst litst@chez.com -----> http://www.chez.com/litst

I was going to send in the final master for the CD. Can I put this tutorial on it! -Kix

Yeah, sure :) You can include the label tutorial too . You will have to tweak it a bit, though ... Is it a problem ? I can do it for you if you want . litst

Litst, I am just a beginner (got Carrara for Christmas) I put up a quick tutorial to maybe solve the twist problem???? Take a look and see what you think. Peabody http://home.adelphia.net/~peabody/Carrara/Threads.html

Hey Peabody, this is much better than our old technique ! Wish i'd thought of that, it's so cool :) I'll link to your page if you're okay .

Kixum posted Mon, 06 January 2003 at 1:53 PM

Shouldn't be a problem for to snag it. Peabody, are you up for a CD submission? If you are, click on the link in the banner to send me a release email. Thanks, -Kix

I've played a bit with your ingenious technique, Peabody . It's very fast ! But the spiral is not very regular . I don't understand why ... But hey, who needs a close-up for a bolt ? On the picture i attach, it's difficult to see a difference :) BTW, i love how we can improve our skills together on this forum :) Later, litst

I'm curious: Is there a noticable difference in file size between the two techniques?

MarkBremmer posted Mon, 06 January 2003 at 2:57 PM

Oh man! I'm sitting here slapping my head thinking, "Duh, how obvious was that!?" Nice work Peabody. Litst, I kept misplacing the "untwist" formula that was discussed many threads back. Thanks for the Tut! Mark

Being new to this game I have no idea why they would be irregular. Do you mean irregular in the spacing of the threads? Maybe when I have some idea what I am doing I will know....LOL. Kix, thank you for asking, I have sent the email. I cleaned it up a little and made a zip file for you but it was a "rush job" so it isn't real fancy. Feel free to make any changes you want to it. Also, litst, I have no problem with you linking to my page. I'll just have to remember not to delete it. :) Peabody

Terri, i haven't checked, but i don't think there's any big difference between the file sizes . In the two cases, it's just a spline object with a spiral extrusion and two sections . Mark, the reason i've made this tutorial was because someone asked me how to do and i was lazy to dig into the archives here ;) Peabody, don't you see the little flaw that does like some kind of zig-zag ? Well, it's probably because it's not obvious :) . Again, great technique and thanks for sharing !

litst posted Mon, 06 January 2003 at 3:35 PM

Hum, when i say "some kind of zig-zag", it's one zig and one zag . Just to make things clear ... Yeah i know i'm picky ! ;)

peabody posted Mon, 06 January 2003 at 4:01 PM

Litst, Now I see what you are talking about. I didn't see that before. Well, these were just cheap bolts...not the expensive ones...lol. 'Picky' is what makes your work so good! Peabody

mateo_sancarlos posted Mon, 06 January 2003 at 4:34 PM

I can see the zig-zag, but maybe if you change the spline model to vertex model with 500% value, they would both look the same - very smooth.

mdesmarais posted Tue, 07 January 2003 at 10:40 AM

If you make it a triangle instead of a diamond, that would get rid of some of the facets from the invisible interior, for a lighter poly model, right? I also tried a triangle with the bottom open, but that seems to get twisted. hm. Markd

Ok...the threads are easy to me, but what I want to do is via the spline modeler, make the bolt completely (threads, bare length and tip), but I can't get the cross-sections to order right, I change the number order and can't get it to work. Not an expert in the spline modeler, still learning it so any help would be appreciated. Found thus far its a good modeler. An image would help. Brian

Does anyone have a new link for or a copy of Peabody's tutorial?  The old link is dead.  Thanks.

This tutorial was put onto the Carrara Raydream CD.  I still have it.

I will see if I can post it to the tutorials section.

Sure enough, I still have this tutorial and sure enough, it still works!

I will review the release information I have to see if I can post it.  I'm pretty sure I can.

Thanks kix.  If you can't post it please identify the CD.    I just took a quick look in one of my boxes of CDs and didn't find one for Carrara, but my storage habits aren't consistent.  I also see I have installation files going back to Carrara 4 on my PC, so it might be there somewhere.
