There is a product over at RuntimeDNA called SWAY for Vicki3. The promo pics have poser renders with composited outdoor backgrounds etc. SOOO here is the question. How are these rendered to make it look like outdoor lighting? The Images have a feel I haven't seen in Poser renders. I have left a messege at RuntimeDNA forum, and with the person selling the items, but I've gotten no response. Really not tryin to hype the product, REALLY REALLY interested in the technique of lighting used as I'd like to do similar images on a project I'm working on. I saw a thread here some time ago about this technique, but for the life of me I can't find it. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

I don't have the answer; I'm just bookmarking so I don't miss the responses. I know what you mean about that lighting...it looks very good.

Machineclaw, you might want to send a private message over there to deestilo, I'm sure you will get one then. We don't always have time to read the forums over there, unless we are moderating. You'd be better off sending a private message. Or if you don't want to do that, post a link here and I'll direct Deestilo to it.

"I have left a messege at RuntimeDNA forum, and with the person selling the items, but I've gotten no response." I have done that, there was no reply. I also posted a messege in the RuntimeDNA forum under a thread about the product, again, no more replies since I asked. That's why I'm asking here, thought someone would know or have info.

I'll point him to this thread then. Odd that he didn't answer, he's usually spot on. Pendy

I actually bought SWAY and sent a messege to him thanking him and asking him about his lighting rendering technique, no replies. Thanks, I hope he can shead some light (sorry punny mood) on this for me and others.

I think you might be looking for the "Poser 4 Renderupgrade" by Shademaster. There is something in Free Stuff. Do a search for HDRI. I think that'll get you the results you're looking for. Hope this helps. - amon_g
BeatYourSoul posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 1:26 PM
Ya, sounds like HDRI to me as well.
amon_g posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 1:51 PM
I saw the SWAY images on RDNA and I thought I recognized the HDRI stuff. That's when I said to myself, "Self, you've got to try and use that lighting setup one of these days." Now that it has been brought back to my attention, I just might have to give it a try tonight:)

Yeah lookin back on threads that's what it is. I'll have to snag the freebie and try it. Hope it works in Poser5. Lightsets for p4 or pp4 seem to really make my poser5 go bizzaro. thanks all for pointing me in the right direction.
amon_g posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 2:15 PM
Most of the problems with lighting that I've had in P5 is when a light is "off." Poser seems to go ape @#%! when that happens. I really haven't run into this problem much with SR2.1, but then again, I have gotten into the habit of deleting all of the default lights before adding a light set.
MachineClaw posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 2:34 PM
Ahhhhhh maybe thats my problem. I'll have to play with that. I'm not running into many problems now that I have SR2.1, but I'm still a newbie and run into basic problems with operator error all the time (being ME haha!). Thanks for the tip.

I'm no expert on lighting or Poser 5, but I agree wholeheartedly with amon_q ... delete the default lights before adding a light set, and make sure you delete lights rather than turning them "off." You may also find very satisfactory results with trying one or two lights rather than complex light sets. Poser 5 seems to allow for a delicate touch with lighting. I know not all lighting sets make Poser 5 go funky because I've used Les Bentley's Omnilights, Joaquim Ojeda's Special Lights, and 3DModelz's Volumeric Lighting without a problem. And, yes, I know my own graphics are not good examples of excellent lighting, but the point is that I haven't had Poser 5 crash because of lighting for many weeks.

woohoo, learning new stuff today! Thanks, I have to play around n learn some more.
Tomsde posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 3:24 PM
Daz has light sets wtih python script controls by PC Brothers that can simulate outdoor lighting. Unfortunately it is a older version of phython that P5 doesn't like, and as far as I know there isn't an update for them. I like them a lot and have used them often.
amon_g posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 3:33 PM
Tomsde, what lighting set is that? I'd be interested in taking a look at it, even if I have to re-install PPP. Oh, yeah... MachineClaw, I also found a pretty cool tut on setting up global lighting. I'm going to go through it tonight, but I thought you might be interested in it too. www.3d-cc.com/thirdeyefunction/dl-tutorials-globallight.htm Thanks - amon_g

Sorry about the lack of line breaks in my posts... you think I'd know better... oh, well, one day I'll learn how to post:)
SamTherapy posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 3:35 PM
Non - P5 user here, so maybe I should keep my mouth shut, but since that's not my strong point... I have been experimenting with outdoor lighting and (in P4PP at least) it's ridiculously easy. One very bright infinite light gives a very realistic feel for most outdoor scenes.

I think it is worth trying your Poser 4 suggestion in Poser 5 (and of course not everyone has Poser 5). Would you mind sharing your settings for your outdoor lighting, SamTherapy?
SamTherapy posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 5:50 PM
Yep, all I did was try to emulate the sun on a summer's day. I used one infinite light at 120% intensity, colour white. Shadow map of 1024, all other settings on default. Ok, the sun is yellow, but the light that reaches us here is effectively white. Then I just fiddled around with the angle/height until I was happy. I'll see if I can find a render. It's nothing special, but it looks realistic IMO.

Yes, well, Vicky always has a problem with waredrobe. Thank you! I will try your setting. I've gotten in a rut with dark interior scenes, and feel the need to break out into the outdoors. :) Nice building.
SamTherapy posted Mon, 13 January 2003 at 6:26 PM
Thank you! The building is from Poserworld. I bought an annual subscription yesterday. :)

haha, didn't see the building, guess I'm just gunna have to go n grab that. I like the sun effect, I really need to learn more about lighting, cameras etc. I just picked up a digi camera and those pics are dark on me too. Guess I have more things to learn about basic lighting than just how poser works. Feels like I'm back taking college courses whew, so much material to learn.

The light set I'm refering to is Environmental Lighting under the software section at Daz 3d. Go there and you will see the light sets.

Cool Tomsde! Thanks! I'll have to go and take a look at that.SamTherapy, I have been looking at getting a PoserWorld subscription, but you've put me over the edge. Thanks! :P You can never have too many buildings. :)
I did do a little test with the global lighting and I've posted the results in the gallery. It took forever and a day to render, but I think it was worth the time.
