I was trying to free up some space on my computer and went to the windows temp. file...there was 785MB of crap in there that could be deleted (files ending in .TMP)! I guess I had always assumed that the temporary internet files were the same thing so had never bothered to look in the Windows temp. folder. Guess I should clean house more often. LOL

Haha, it's the first thing I suggest to people who have problems with their system. Second thing is defrag. Third is, "Call a tech, I'm gone!" :)

Don't you have to be careful about which Temp files to delete?
BeatYourSoul posted Fri, 17 January 2003 at 10:36 AM
Nope, if some of them are in use, you'll get an error message saying so. Just delete everything else.

That's why I just use the IE Options to delete temp internet files. If I deleted all of my cookies from the Temporary Internet Files directory, and I'll admit that most of them are junk (trackers, counters, and ads), I'd have to resign in to about 30 to 50 sites.
rockets posted Fri, 17 January 2003 at 7:06 PM
You guys are talking about the temporary internet files, but if you go to windows/temp files you might be as surprised as I was to find 785MB worth of junk that can be deleted. If it ends with .TMP toss it!

A little trick I do for the few cookies I want to keep.
Like the Rosity ones or to my other accounts that I want to have cookies saved. I do a copy/paste of these cookies and stow them away in a cookie jar folder. Now when I want to clean out my cookie files, instead of trying to scroll through and pick out my favorites, I just delete all the cookies and paste my list of cookies from my Cookie jar back into the file once it has been cleaned :)
ta da,
I still say buying a new computer is much easier :P

IE 6 blocks most cookies by default so you don't have to worry so much anymore if you have it. It has separate delete functions for cookies and the other stuff. My cookies take so little space anymore I don't even think about them. But another tip I've heard if you have XP is to get rid of some of the system restore points if you don't need them. They can take up scads of space and I'm thinking I have to check it out myself. Somehow, even with being careful about temp files, recent history, and temporary internet files, the stuff on my c: drive is now taking up about 5 more gigs than it did a couple months ago.
