yep sorry. After careful consideration, The Dark Faction's freebies are no longer avaible. There are several reasons behind it but the most and fore most being its not cost effective. Now i know some people are going to be upset over it but, sorry it can't be helped. I can not continue paying for 15gigs of bandwidth per day, each gig costs me money and at the rate its been going, i can't afford to keep it going, it'd be more then the rent on my house, 2 fold. I may do something later down the road, like a buyers only free section with a news letter they sign up to to be able to get to the freebies, or a weekly freebie like daz. Haven't desided at this time.

I know I perfectly understand, it is very expensive...you might want to check out Infinology.com in the future, they have a very highbandwidth allowaance and space allowance for a very reasonable price blessings to you in your future endeavors -^..^-~~

hmm, if you could float about 1200 a month for a connections I know how you could have a site with a minimum data transfer requirement of 300 gigs a month. oc3 and connected to a backbone not an isp. the backbones are where isp's get thier connection from. ~g~

(sheesh, 'bandwidth: the final frontier.')

This is totally understandable. It just doesn't make sense to pay in order to give something away. This is especially true if your generosity involves great financial sacrifice. The Poser community was helped tremendously by Internet access. Unfortunately that wealth of resources is threatened by the cost of providing those resources. Eventually, only the "commercial" Poser sites will be able to survive, and that will be if they generate sufficient funds to cover costs.

I addressed it this way. Any new freebie gets hosted on the server of one of my internet accounts. I forget how much I pay per month and the bandwidth allowed..... its whatever the average is. I ensure that the freebie on offer is approx no larger than 1.5 Mb, definitely not greater than 2 Mb. This takes care of the initial rush of downloads. When I come to put up a new freebie the new file takes the place of the old one. The old one then gets placed on the server in my office. This server is only an old Pentium 2 machine running at 200 Hz with enough RAM to remember how to walk and chew gum but not much more. I do not have a T1 line but rely on a DSL cable link. Judging from the feed back I get and my review of my server logs it appears to be working well. I can continue to offer boat loads of freestuff and only pay for an ISP hosted 50 Mb server plus a DSL internet connection.

Bloodsong, 1200 is base cost in canadian for an oc3 ( optic cable 3 ) and a minimum data transfer of 300 gigs a month, that is effectively 3 t1 connections. you MUST have 300 gigs of data transfer or you pay more. and it is literally the type of connection an isp has. a co-location deal ( server in someone else's data center ) can be as low as 500 a month, with oc3 connection and 500 gigs of data transfer max. ( unless you are willing to pay 10 a gig over. )

Phil, my cable connection works fine for the server I've got right now also, only problem is that I'm not supposed to have server on my account, as it isn't a commercial account. if the isp ever fingers out I'm hosting free stuff for people my connection is gone.

I have a deal with a local server hosting company. Instead of getting a paycheck I get a hosted server with all the space I could ever want. They got the better end of the deal but I cant complain. I have abused it well. Bandwidth usage for the holiday page: 54,219 flies dl (112800104 KB transfered) to 4613 individuals. There was 195717 page hits. I also have Valandar's popular files & back-ups of PhilC's stuff so when the server does get hit it gets hit hard.

Big up to you Caleb for such cool free stuff. It's true that people don't appreciate nice freebies until they are gone or they'd support the merchants who make them all the more. I'm just glad I got your cd before the freebies were retired. Regards, Brent

Yes, that does suck ... there were a few things I saw yesterday while at work that I had planned to try and grab. But I do understand.

Some folks have already put in enough hours for a second, un-paid fulltime job, just doing stuff to give away to others. Then you consider a real need to buy a better computer, or pay some dreaded "essential bills." All of a sudden the "bandwidth exceeded" message creeps up, with a suggestion that $20 a month would handle the expenses incurred by the bandwidth. Now let's see: 1.) Pay to give something away. 2.) Hope to save for a new computer 3.) Pay some bills?! Which is the necessity? Which provides the greatest personal satisfaction? Add to that the fact that this guy has been banned from every online Poser community. Hmm gee?!

I would think that if you are getting that kind of traffic for your freebies, its time to do the market place.

see... some people don't even know what it is that there grabbing from me... they just grab it cause its there, not because its good and they remember who makes it. I don't do tutorials, I did one for the renderosity magazine and that was it. I'm not the greatest at explaining how i do things. I do models and textures.
