As I lie here and watch you sleep, and listen to you breathe, I know that you are my happiness and all my hopes and dreams. You say, "Don't get to attached for I am leaving soon." I really wish your love for me was the same as mine for you. You say, "I have warned you and so your heart won't break." I'm sure you're right about my heart its beating will go on. But when you leave this home for good you'll take my soul with you, and so my beating heart will have to beat alone. Attached in ways you do not know, my soul entwined itself with yours years ago. I cannot help but feel the pain of each gentle tug you give when you say, "I'm going to go, some day, some day soon. I warned you so don't cry that silly tear that I see there in you eye." As I lie and watch you sleep and listen to you breathe. My love for you grows deeper still and you grow even dearer.

Actually in the poem that was true. But alas, now he's gone and my heart breaks every day.

I think you vivified every protective emotion left within me. After such words you deserve to be loved deeply, fully, truly.

I like the fact that the object of the poem is ambiguous. For the romantic, it's a lover who can't quite give up their wandering ways. For the optimistic, it's a child growing up. For the meloncholy-minded, it's a lover (or spouse) who is ill and knows that one day soon they'll pass on. I always appreciate a poem that allows a reader to feel, instead of forcing it on them. Cheers!
