Well, after this much time I can suffice to say that David Owen is; On a LONG vacation. Dead. Or giving us the cold shoulder. After three follow-up e-mails, after the first contact, they have yet to reply back to me. I feel they are just blowing us off on our offer to translate their models from .3dmf, to .3ds. Feel free to find/conatct them, if you wish. Maybe someone else can further than I did, lol. AgentSmith

Gee, that's too bad! Was looking forward to their interaction.
AgentSmith posted Tue, 11 March 2003 at 8:20 PM
Me too. I thought it would be helping them out also, perhaps they didn't want to deal with the bandwidth.

Perhaps there's some kinda deal they have with that DesignWorkshop program whatchamacallit... Would also be more convienient if they compressed in .zip too. But what can I say.

uh..I haven't actually checked it out, but if I read the Computer Arts issue with Amapi 5.15 in is correct, the program can do the conversion, at least one way. I've been too busy to check about conversion the other way, but if anyone else has a copy, they could check. I dropped a thread on this a day or two ago..heck, I just barely got it loaded..;) Besides, you get a modeller that can create Bryce models..if you need one..;)

I actually own Design Workshop, but don't know the legalities as far as converting them and sharing.
AgentSmith posted Tue, 11 March 2003 at 9:46 PM
I believe Artiface owns both, so I don't think there is a problem with that. I had worked out all the mass batch conversion and zipping points, so that was not a problem. The ONLY problem, is David Owen/Artiface not returning any e-mails.

It may be that from their point of view, the economic incentive just isn't there. Perhaps if there were a way for them to get free advertising out of it or some other gain they might be more willing to part with a limited number of freebes / conversions.
AgentSmith posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 2:19 AM
Oh...the e-mail I sent to them was VERY incentive as far as advertising being thrown their way. i.e., How many places I could put their info and link, how many members Renderosity has, how much traffic, daily hits, etc. Oh, I will keep e-mailing once a week, it just had been a while and I wanted to give all of you kids an update of what was going on is all. I will keep e-mailing. AgentSmith

Agent Smith, Perhaps the key is in texturing. I don't know if the 3DMFs are textured or not but the example I was able to view in Corel Paint did not appear to be textured in any way (pretty basic). I would not venture to volenteer anyone, but there are some pretty good texturers here. Perhaps if they saw it from the perspective of enhancement of their product? just a random half thought out idea. Anyway, Thanks for trying Agent Smith, - TJ
AgentSmith posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 2:25 PM
No, as far as what I have looked at, no textures. I'll have to work that in, in the next e-mail. Thanks. AS

AgentSmith couldn't you host those ones converted by your friend here, or would Artifice be unhappy about that?? Cat
AgentSmith posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 4:30 PM
Oh, they would be very unhappy about it. They want their models (in any format) only to be downloadable from their site. (once again, too bad) AS

I'm beginning to think they are a mean spirited bunch of people. I don't see why they won't host 3Ds for us, I mean there must be thousands of people here at Renderosity who would be interested in their software if we had a link to Artifice from here. A really sad state of affairs and it p'es me right off. Excuse the p's. Cat

I'm actually still thinking/hoping the e-mails are just getting shuffled through or something, somehow missed. I'm definetly going to keep e-mailing. And, I'm going to start sending them NOT directly to David Owen, see what happens. Maybe he is on vacation, or even got fired, or quit... It really is a fairly good win/win situation. Even if they didn't keep the 3ds files up forever, but long enough to spark more interst in their software. I KNOW they would take a hit in bandwidth, that's the only downside in any of this. That would cost money, and they would have to re-coup that expense. AS

Perhaps they don't want a more common format, because once people hear that they have free models that their bandwidth will get sucked dry. LOL

Is it possible to get something to convert 3dmf to dxf? Bryce can read dxfs. I can check to see if my old copy of raydream can read 3dmf and export dxfs, if it would help. Have to see if I still have it. Thought 3dmf was a file format found on a mac
Trouble posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 8:37 AM
I downloaded 3 buildings last night and converted them to .obj with Deep Exploration. They imported into Bryce just fine. If anybody has a single building they would like to convert, you can sitemail me but I'm not into mass conversions like AS's friend. :) Don't have the time or resources to do hundreds. Cie
AgentSmith posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 12:23 PM
I think you're right about the 3dmf being mac, Polytrans said something about "Apple" when it converted it. Yeah, I think the real issue was bandwidth. AS

Used to have Strata for mac and I used to use it to make 3dmf files so I could load them into a 3d app I had.
