Is this project ever going to get finished? I've been working on my project for more than 30 hours now and it's not even near 20% complete. This is again a part of the scene that is just finished. It's one of the "subquests" (the quest for extraterrestial intelligence from SETI). This image is 90% bryce. I used 5 image textures mapped on 18000 2D-planes for the main stars and then I used another few thousand spheres with volume textures for the gasses and the other stars. I rendered about 30 layers and combined them in PSP in screen or additive mode. Layering is lot's faster than rendering more than 20000 additive objects straight in bryce :)

And people say bryce doesn't have particles. A bit of multireplicating and ranomizing works just as good.

Wow Rayraz terrific job, but there seems to be a typo here. Did you really mean EIGHTEEN THOUSAND 2d planes? If I used volumetric textures on 10 things in a scene my computer would melt down yet you said there are a few thousand volumetric spheres here. WOW!! You must have a nuclear powered computer. Once again nice work. I used to enjoy painting galaxies on the back windows of my cars. ( from the inside so they wouldn't wear off in the wind and rain )

When you render in layers doesn't that stop the parts that aren't rendering from interacting with those that are?

Rayraz the words that come to mind are "F**kin' Mad Man". Do you mean there are actually 18000 individual 2D-planes. I guess you did well in your exams then. LOL.........got to laugh great work for sure. Cheers Cat

yes, layering doesn't work very well when the particles need to ineract, like reflections, but in this image that wasn't neccesary. In fact the layering made sure I didn't get those nasty intersecting-volumetrics artefacts. And there's no typo's in the number of objects.

I've got a chemistry exam tomorrow and a second one on friday. After that I have 2 months or so without exams and than the national final exams start. But I had a few days off in between wich gave me a 'little' time to make this.

Makes my 180 2d transmapped pict object forest look a bit whimpy. Nice effect btw.
