*SIGH*

Every time I try to start a new art project, I have to stop and build something. I could have completed a nice render yesterday as a gift to a friend, but no, I'm too lazy to completely postwork a mane every time I add a horse to a scene.

So, would anyone be interested in this? It's a transmapped, conforming mane for the Poser horse.

Little_Dragon posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 7:51 PM

I'm thinking of adding some styling and windblown morphs, but this is what it looks like in its bare-bones state. Body handles would probably be better, but I haven't quite got the hang of them yet. Oh, the tail is a separate transmapped poseable figure, also.

Little_Dragon posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 7:53 PM

More wasted bandwidth ....

The mane actually conforms quite well in all of my tests so far.

Little_Dragon posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 7:56 PM

The glossy highlights are not painted onto the texture. They're real. Here's a closeup.

This probably needs a better transmap.

None of these images are postworked, incidentally.

Little_Dragon posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 7:59 PM

Just because I can ....

dialyn posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 8:01 PM

That's very cool. You're very inventive. I like it. :) I'd be interested.

tasquah posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 8:10 PM

I would L.D. I was just getting ready to do some hores stuff and this would add lots of pazaz to the P4 horse.

Redfern posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 9:04 PM

This has got to be another project depicting White Pony, isn't it? Whatever it is, I know he'll like it! As for the mane, a very nice effect, even in its "bare bones" state. I'm sure any wind swept morphs you create will make it look positively stunning! Sincerely, Bill

Little_Dragon posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 9:15 PM

I believe HaiGan is/was working on a tail. I was waiting for its release, but in a supreme fit of procrastination on my part, I decided to make my own.

Variety is a good thing. I hope she finishes hers.

Yes, Redfern, it's for an art project depicting Florence and White Pony, although likely not in the way you think. I wasted the evening building this mesh instead of completing their render. Oh, sure, it'll save me postwork time in the long run ... assuming I don't get sidetracked by some other needless exercise in model-making.

hauksdottir posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 9:15 PM

Now THAT is a horse of a different color! Yikes! (cover my eyes and cower in the corner to avoid being poked by a green-purple-and-orange horn) I'd like him, too! Really.

Little_Dragon posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 9:27 PM

I'll include the mane-and-tail rainbow textures (and perhaps the alicorn smart-prop) in the bundle, but the pale horse texture and bump map aren't mine. They're a modification of caroluk's Palomino texture from free stuff, and a bump map by holyforest.

PheonixRising posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 9:43 PM

Cool. Hope about the charger too. This is great. People will go nuts for this. been waiting years to see who would do hair for the horse. Regards, Anton

Hey LD, that is neat! Any chance of making it flexible enough to become a spinal 'mane' on some of the centaur projects out there...? Hell, yes, I'm greedy...

Little_Dragon posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 10:28 PM

Hmmm. I could probably refit this for the charger with a bit of effort. I never did care for its original transmapped mane (no disrespect intended).

Centaur manes? Hairstyles, or hairy backs? :) No chance in its current state. I don't have the DAZ centaur, but I could eventually look into building something for the freebie centaurs out there.

I'm greedy, also.

I'll do some more work on the conformers, maps, and morphs this evening, then try to upload everything to Free Stuff before morning. Then it's a matter of waiting for the review board's approval, I suppose.

Can always use more horse stuff. My sister will really love it. So will I.

Dreamspinner posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 11:18 PM

This has been needed for a very long time. It's one of the reasons I haven't used the Poser horse for anything. I know most people now use the horse for the making of a Unicorn, but if you do some research into old tapesteries, a Unicorn, was actually some sort of antilope relation. I bought the Antilope pack from DAZ for that reason, but...no mane, ect. I'm with you if you can make this work with the Antilope pack too! Liz Pope Dreamspinner

Little_Dragon posted Mon, 07 April 2003 at 11:35 PM

I don't have the antelope expansion pack (never really cared for venison), although I did pick up the buck when it was added to the Platinum Club.

Love the mane! I've been trying a couple of my own, but none of them have got to the ready-for-conforming stage. A mane makes the horse look heaps better. I'd love to see this one available, pretty please? The tail I was working on has been uploaded to Freestuff, it's now waiting for approval. :)

Thankyou Little_Dragon and Haigan:) I made a conforming mane and tail myself but they just didn't conform properly! I recently uploaded a new free 2000x2000 black horse texture to my website, the DNS hasn't propergated yet so you have to reach it via the ip address, once propergated it will be at www.ladyfyre-graphics.com. The eyes on the horse are not on the texture but an eye prop I'm working on for a future freebie, they take my own textures as well as the ones for Blackhearted's Blackeyes and V3. I'm looking forward to all the equine artwork :) Alla

Now I'll have to hurry up and finish the tack I've been working on. :)

Little_Dragon posted Tue, 08 April 2003 at 4:10 AM

Mine didn't conform properly at first, either. After three or four tries, I took a close look at the donor .cr2 and realized that even though I'd zeroed all the joints beforehand, the hip had a yTrans of -0.040. That's a lovely texture. Thanks!

Wow! It's amazing how much difference a flowing mane makes for the P4 horse. Anxiously awaiting its arrival in Free Stuff....

Dale B posted Tue, 08 April 2003 at 8:55 AM

A line of hair down the human spine of course. What else? ;)

Little_Dragon posted Tue, 08 April 2003 at 10:14 AM

I've uploaded both items. The mane is a bit resource-heavy (although not nearly as bad as Poser 5's dynamic hair). I'm not quite certain how the mesh ended up larger than Michael's ....

Little_Dragon posted Tue, 08 April 2003 at 11:06 AM

Wow, everything is up! That was fast.

Is it just me, or does it feel a little strange to go into Free Stuff and be mooned by two different horses simultaneously?

quixote posted Tue, 08 April 2003 at 11:17 AM

Jeez... and they say size don't count... Maybe not for dragons. It may take all day to download this. Slow. Thanks LD.

My thanks again to Alla for the new texture. I can do the eyeball-prop trick too, with my AnthroEyes from Free Stuff. Requires some adjustment to fit them into the eyesockets, but it's definitely an improvement.

HaiGan posted Wed, 09 April 2003 at 2:19 AM

Little_Dragon, if Poserosity still has problems come this evening UK time, do you want me to post your bits temporarily to my other site? I think I've got the disk space left. I'd offer to do it right now, but I can't remember the darn password to ftp via the command line, got to wait 'til I get home to my ftp client! :p Hopefully things'll be fixed by then, though.

Little_Dragon posted Wed, 09 April 2003 at 3:50 AM

Your offer is very kind, HaiGan. If you wish, by all means do so, but don't go to any trouble. The mane and tail files are 3.66MB and 1.03MB, respectively.

Tiny posted Wed, 09 April 2003 at 3:28 PM

I'm so happy for this texture, mane, tail and ear morph. It almost looks as a real horse! More textures like this pleeeeees!

This is a Nordsvensk horse. The only thing with it is the "gap" in his hind thigh (don't know what it is called in english). Did someone have a fix for that?

HaiGan posted Wed, 09 April 2003 at 5:44 PM

Woohoo! Very nice, Tiny. Lovely pony type. Don't know what you mean about a gap, though. Maybe post a picture to illustrate that more clearly? Little_Dragon, Poserosity is still mostly down, but I don't know if you emailed me those files to post them on my other site until Poserosity's fixed, because my POP mail is down too until 2am (emergency maintenance work, apparently). So much for that one being the best one to use :p . I managed to get the mane to download at work earlier, but didn't cut it to disk to bring home. If you fwing the thumbnails and the tail to haigan@hot-shot.com I'll try to get them all posted for you tomorrow instead.

Little_Dragon posted Wed, 09 April 2003 at 7:47 PM

I see that Tiny found the forelock morphs. :)

A tip for anyone who downloaded my mane-and-tail files and is still reading this thread: apply the transmap as a bump map. It breaks up the specular highlights (especially on the tail) and makes everything look more strand-like.

As I mentioned in IM, HaiGan, both .zip files are too large for my HotMail account. I can post the mane's thumbnail, however (see above); right-click and save your own copy. Thank you.

I'm studying body handles now. If I master the technique, I'll create an improved version of the mane. At the very least, it'll trim down the size of the CR2 by eliminating some unnecessary morphs. I'll also look into ways to reduce the complexity of the mesh without sacrificing detail. 40000+ polys is ridiculous, even if it does look good.

Tiny posted Thu, 10 April 2003 at 8:09 AM

If you are going to attack the mane again, would it be possible to hide either side of the mane? So when the user (this is in our coming computer game) brushes the mane it'll stay on one side.

I twisted the direction of low neck part transmap. So it'll fall more straight. It was simple and worked quite well

Tiny posted Thu, 10 April 2003 at 8:15 AM

HaiGan> It is a "bump" in the lower but area on each thigh. It does not appear when it is a slim long legged horse. Only on short legged chubby types, I think.

This horse is formed exactly after a photo so I can't start stretching and change the parts too much. Our users are very picky about what a horse looks like. And the different races. :o)

HaiGan posted Thu, 10 April 2003 at 11:03 AM

Poserosity is down completely- if you're a member, read your webmail. I should be able to get your mane posted this evening, Little_Dragon (about 2 hours' time-ish), but I can't host it for long at that site because the bandwidth restrictions are harsh and that tail's pretty popular! Did you use magnets or scaling to modify the proportions, Tiny?

Tiny posted Thu, 10 April 2003 at 11:29 AM

Only scaling.

HaiGan posted Thu, 10 April 2003 at 12:52 PM

Then uless you're happy fiddling with the scaling in the joint parameters, you might do better trying magnets- in the mgnet properties, select 'add element to deform' and go through adding every body-part that might be affected, and then you won't get sharp differences between the joints. On the limbs, scaling works best with the Y-coord and use magnets for the X and Z coords. Maybe you could try the Ultimate Horse, if you haven't got that already, that's had a lot of good work done on morphing and scaling the Poser horse. Wish I could remember where it's at. Anyone else?

Little_Dragon posted Thu, 10 April 2003 at 10:52 PM

Thanks for putting up the mane, HaiGan. I appreciate it.

Tiny, until I build a new version of the mane, you can use Poser's grouping tool to create new material groups for each side. Then you can make one side completely invisible by adjusting the material settings. If I'd had any sense, I would have thought to do this in the initial release. I knew that having the mane on one side or another would be an issue for some people.

Tiny posted Fri, 11 April 2003 at 5:20 AM

Thanks for the suggestion about grouping. I'll do that.

And I will get the ultimate horse thingy right away. :o)

Future looks better allready!
