Attached Link: F18's from www.3dcafe.com, render on Bryce.
Greetings, everyone! My Name is Robinson, from dZ arts. I'm totally new to the 3D world (about a month using Bryce & Poser), and I work exclusivelly with Mac's here in Brazil (despite the english name, I'm brazilian, my mother is from Scotchland). Here is a render I've done with F18's meshes I've downloaded from the internet, rendered in Bryce4. My question is: anyone here knows a modeler for Macintosh that imports .max files from 3d Studio Max ? A friend of mine loaned me several CD's filled with useful models, all on .max ... any advice would be greatly apreciated, as I don't have access to a PC Computer to convert about 10000 model's to .obj... thanxs, and sorry for my poor english!Ghostofmacbeth posted Sat, 27 May 2000 at 12:57 PM
I wish I did .. I am on a Mac as well. I know there is a PC file that converts them to other programs but you have to know someone. Nice pic and welcome .. Sorry I couldn't help

Mac version Bryce doesn't use 3DS? See if a program called Polytrans is available for Mac. It'll cost, but it's worth it. I can't recall right off hand, but it should be able to convert to some kind of Mac format

I've checked on the Polytrans, it's for SGi and WinNT only. They say on the site 'works fine on Mac via Softwindows', but I will not purchase a PC Emulator AND the Polytrans, it's abusive. I've emailed then about a Mac version... BTW, thanks on the kind coments. These F18's are imported in .3ds format then I've remade all textures on Bryce4. Would be nice to export it to outside of Bryce and keep my new textures...

They've answered: 'Well, first of all, you must own a copy of 3DS MAX in order to convert .max files. PolyTrans can only convert .max files by plugging PolyTrans into 3DS MAX itself as a native plug-in system. Second, I will never do a Mac port because there is literally 0 demand for it. I think we've sold 16 copies for every 5000 copies of PolyTrans. Most notably, PolyTrans is 100% dependent upon the Windows UI and all the Intel based third party libraries (SoftImage, OpenFlight, Metastream, etc. etc). hence, the need for a Windows emulator. Sorry!' Or, obviously, the big windows conspiracy cannot be attacked. . . Guess I will take all CD's to a Bureau or something and rent an PC for a lot of hours, convert it all and save on Mac CD-R's... pathetic...

I've seen so many really nice 3D objects that have the .max extension (some of the very best, in fact) and are completely unusable to any of the programs I use. I wonder why so many artists are offering that format. I wonder why Bryce and Poser haven't yet allowed use of this format. We can now finally use .lwo and a few others that we couldn't use before. It seems the .max is still out of reach. Maybe someone with a whole lot of talent and programming experience can create an application that will convert .max to say .3DS or any of the other standard formats. Melanie

Melanie: a friend of mine said it's political stress from autodesk (maker of 3d Max), they don't want the .max file format to be as the .3ds is now. Why, I wonder... Even the polytrans for PC needs the MAX installed on the PC to run, pathetic...
