  1. Corel. 2) Yep. Corel had some plans for it I hear but due to their apparent finacial problems it may be a while. if I had the bucks I'd check out Body paint (Maxum)(sp)

Actually Painter 8 has just been released. They have a pretty good upgrade deal going on right now.

Actually Painter 3D is not Painter by corel at all. Where corel painter's a software similar to Photoshop to simulate painting with real media, Painter 3D is a paint tool specially for texturing 3d models. You can view your model in 3D and paint on the UV directly and then saving the texture. It was owned by Metacreations and yep my copy's gracefully collecting dust somwhere in the house :) A search on goggle got this link http://www.bryceworks.com/p3d/p3dindex.html

I have Painter 3D but no longer use it. I don't think Corel has done anything with Painter 3D ... and compared to other 3D paint tools Painter 3D's features aren't as hefty. Other apps that let you paint on 3D objects are ZBrush (tricky interface and not as simple to use, but it works), Body Paint (haven't tried it), and Deep Paint 3D (excellent, but pricey).

Hi, Deecey I have all three Dp3D plub DeeUV(Texture Weapons) is a cool 3d painting suite. Bp3d is good for realtime painting in 3d, with rendered result. ZB is easy to use with Texture Master. I mentioned Painter 3D as I don't want to miss this part when I do a feature for 3d painting-if p3d did exist. P8 is cool for it new UI.

i believe that maxon's bodypaint has a problem where you can't paint properly over the seams of a texture, whereas deep|paint 3d by right hemisphere lets you do just that. the lightwave version, while slimmed down, is cheaper than bodypaint, although bodypaint has some great reviews. :)

bikermouse posted Tue, 06 May 2003 at 9:51 AM

If the download size were not prohibitive 90+MB I'd have a look at it. As it is, I amongst others will have to depend on reviews from those who are able to dl it. Someone please let us know what you find out. BTW According to my sources Corel does own P3d as well as Painter - the rumors about them doing something with it have been foating around for a while now. Thanks for any info, - TJ

BP3D's painting can do as good as what DP3D can, it is just a matter of uvmapping technique. You need to se a good UV map to paint correctly, or preferable. Check Maxon for bp3d tut. But DP3D can do prpjection mode, which might be a good feature to some. Can't say which is the best, the most important issue is : can you paint a good texture ? You can do the same result with 2d, ps. painter, psp... as it is all aboput painting on a flat texture ( uvmapped texture ).

obsolete: a neat idea at the time, but always pretty broken as software. did not do any graphics accleration, as i recall. . .Painfully slow screen redraws. of historical interest only (it was way ahead of its time!)

poserpro posted Tue, 06 May 2003 at 1:37 PM

right, P3D was early program for 3d paiting at that time, Dp3d and bp3d were not seen then I guess, except for 4d paint ( prior version of dp3d).

I have it somewhere, but uninstalled it from my computer a couple of years ago. No matter how hard I tried, I could never learn how to use it properly. It looked so cool and easy in the ad MetaCreations mailed out to me, so I bought it. It turned out to be frustrating and uncontrollable for me. I didn't like it and thought it was a waste of my money. Melanie

I got Painter 3d at ebay. Works in win2k well enough but just a real bear to get the material to sit right on the model once its imported into Poser or Bryce. I'm back to using UVMapper. Body paint seemed promising. There's a demo out. Deep Paint was more interesting on the interface but the demo crashed my system a lot. I think all the paint programs are over priced. Its a niche market and really does need some competition.
