I am just playing at this point. I have come up with a new technique for doing the scaly bits. It's a lot less work intensive that the technique I used on the Apatasaurus maps.

These renders are without bump maps or material settings, which would help their appearance even more.

I would eventually redo these maps completely, but what do you think of the color schemes?

Would there be any interest in a scaly type hound like this?

Well, I like them. I think it adds a new deminsion to the beast.

Crescent posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 10:00 AM

I like the blue one. The green one is too light/bright for me. If you deepened the greens, perhaps adding a touch of brown as well, I'd probably like it better. The scale effect itself is nicely done.

Gorodin posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 10:31 AM

Yah, I plan on doing a deeper green as well, something closer to the Mil Dragon.

Ghostofmacbeth posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 10:44 AM

Lookign pretty good .. I agree about the deeper green and also think the scales on the face could be a bit smaller. I still keep thinking of Bronx from the Gargoyles TV show when I see him. That and a little bit of the Sabertooth characters from Ice Age.

Gorodin posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 11:00 AM

Yah, I agree about the face scales. One of the reasons I said I would be completely re-doing the maps... Glad you all seem to like the concept. I will be posting more pics as I play.

ElorOnceDark posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 11:16 AM

Wow! The red one is excellent! This pack would get me to buy the beastie!

Cin- posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 1:30 PM

I definitely would pick these up... especially the black and red one.

Gorodin posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 1:42 PM

Here's what I plan to do - These textures you see here are really not much more than tests and will be tossed. I will be starting from scratch and building a pack of 4 scaly beasts with a similar style but with more attention to the details and better face treatments: - Dragon Hound - similar in coloring to the Mil Dragon - Lava Dog - similar to the black and red beastie above - Stone Dog - going for a rocky look - Demon Dog - ?? Would there be an interest in a seperate pack of non-scaly beasties with sinilar coloring?

Cin- posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 4:03 PM

Demon Dog should look like his flesh is rotting off... err, well I guess that would be zombie dog though, huh?

ElorOnceDark posted Thu, 08 May 2003 at 7:25 PM

I like the scaly look personally, but I'd be interested in what you had in mind for other non-scaly textures.

Gorodin posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 2:36 AM

This is more like the finished product I had in mind...

Gorodin posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 3:30 AM

And here is the DragonHound

Gorodin posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 4:15 AM

I'm not sure what to call this guy... :-)

Gorodin posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 4:26 AM

Sort of makes those 1st 3 look like crap, huh?

barb posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 9:41 AM

re: Sort of makes those 1st 3 look like crap, huh? I don't think so - I liked that ist green image as well - Barb

fretshredder posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 10:09 AM

holy moses! those are wicked! You're gonnamake me hafta get that derned hellhound ;-)

Gorodin posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 10:29 AM

Barb - I'll do a new style one in that color scheme too then. :-)

ElorOnceDark posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 10:58 AM

Holy S***! Damn! The red one blew me away when the pic came up! The way his hide glistens at the shoulder! Also the minute cracks on the stone one are very impressive! Very nice! I tell ya, these are great! Nice details around the face, and the transition from the smaller scales to the larger ones is very cool! They all look very mean! Do you mind me asking what paint program you use?

Gorodin posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 11:27 AM

All done in Photoshop. :-)

ElorOnceDark posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 11:32 AM

Wow! I thought you were using Deep Paint 3D. I was hoping you could give me some pointers! LOL! Well, great work man. I just bought the gargoyle in anticipation of these textures!

queri posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 4:40 PM

The closer to stone, the happier I am. I'd love to see a black granite with nearly human red eyes, a deep rosequartz or lapis blue with steely matrix. An agate brown with gold and sand fissures. This is what makes him scary in my opinion, he is fierce and fast and impenetrable stone. Which means he can be very beautiful and still deadly, some heroies might like to have one. Clear quartz with dark green and gold inclusions. Emily Emily

queri posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 4:42 PM

I meant heroines but I guess what I wrote straddles the gap. I prefer the expressive eyes first designed only horrified up a bit. Emily

Cin- posted Fri, 09 May 2003 at 10:57 PM

I want... I want... I want!!! I'd call that last one "Rockhound" :) but then I'm not that creative.

Gorodin posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 12:58 AM

You know, the more I play with this hound, the more I realize how cool he really is! The morph flexibility is fantastic!

This little guy is pretty dang versatile for only 2 bucks!

fretshredder posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 2:01 AM

G-- those textures are looking quite sweet ... quite sweet indeed. And you aren't kidding about how versatile this bad boy is for 2 bucks! can't beat it with a 10 foot stick :-)

Gorodin posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 2:17 AM

:-)

Gorodin posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 2:25 AM

Okay, I am having *way* too much fun now... :-)

These are outstanding! Will they be at DAZ?

They will be at DAZ, hopefully next week.

Gorodin posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 2:41 AM

A slight rework of the DragonHound texture...

Gorodin posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 3:28 AM

What do you think of my demon dog? Its a but late at night for me to have a coherent opinion... Do you like this guy? Or should i try another approach for a "demon dog"?

Ghostofmacbeth posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 11:12 AM

Looking good . I like the black and whiteish one the best so far. The demon dog lost a little of it's punch in the latest render. It seems to be a little more purple now than the deep blood red and I think the previous color worked a bit better. There also seems to be a greenish cast to the underbelly, legs etc. Though the pattern looks good. Could also be the lighting ...

judith posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 11:20 AM

posts 14,15,16, and 35 are my favorites! These look great!

Gorodin posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 11:54 AM

Ghostofmacbeth, #14 is the HellHound #37 is the Demon Dog 2 seperate textures. And yes, #36 is Purple and Green. :-) Currently, the textures planned are: -#14: Hell Hound -#16, 27, 28, 29: Stone Dog -#31, 32: Lizard Dog -#35 (prev, #15): Dragon Hound -#36: Demon Dog #36 is the one I am not sure about right now... Should I keep him, or try something elsr for "demonic"? Any ideas? Thank you all for your feedback so far.

Ghostofmacbeth posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 1:08 PM

Whoopsie ... Didn't read all the way ... Demon dog could work since the color scene is pretty unnatural and otherworldly. Just not my favorite for general purposes.

Gorodin posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 1:50 PM

What do you all think of this ugly critter? He originally started off as an alternative to the Demon Dog, but I think I'll call him the Flesh Hound. Should he replace the Demon Dog (#36), or should I include both?

Cin- posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 1:54 PM

Both!

Gorodin posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 3:31 PM

Do you prefer the Stone Dog material settings like this, or as seen in #16. This setting looks more like stone, but I'm not sure whichj is cooler...

ElorOnceDark posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 6:46 PM

I like 16 better than 44. He has a stonier look to me. I think I like the flesh dog better than the demon dog, but I'd use both if you were going to include them both. The Hell Hound is still my favorite, followed by 16. I think the 35 Dragon hound looks better than the 16 too. Great work man! I already have render ideas...

Gorodin posted Sat, 10 May 2003 at 7:57 PM

Here's the full set
