Here is a picture of the Crab Nebula as seen through the Hubble. I need to recreate this a truly three-dimensional object for an upcoming hologram we are creating. I've tried mapping various pictures of it onto spheres but am disappointed with the results. Does anyone here have any suggestions on how I could go about creating this in Vue or want to take a crack at it? I might post this in the Bryce forum as well, since I use Bryce too, but I like the way view handles starfields better. THANKS! -Tim

Additive terrains. It's the only way unless you make a mesh then place additive materials on it. Hey you see this one? APOD? I'd say it's really cool. There is a link there on apod to a 260 meg file of that picture..

Lost me ... I'm a Vue newbie (even though I've had it since last fall).

Wow, that is a nice one ... nice res too. I personally like the Eagle nebula the best. Have you seen that one? It's amazing.

PS> There's some pretty good action in the Bryce forum on this right now. Check out the link.

Hi, interesting exercise to get a fully 3D model from a 2D picture in Vue.

See this link for an animated GIF (2megs) of my results with the camera moving about 90deg across the face. It was created using a terrain with the image mapped to it and transparency added also. If this could work then let me know and I will put the Vue file on my site for you.

I am rendering a 360deg version moving the camera around the terrain. It has a couple of Hours to go so I will post a link tomorrow

Cheers
Neil

P.S. rendered in Final Mode

Wow, that looks almost spot on to what I need, that's great. I can see now how the use of terrains works quite well for this application. It looks like you used the Crab Nebula picture to map onto the terrain, right?

Yes, I definitely would love to get the Vue file! Just IM me the link if you want. No need to render the 360, I'm sold. ;) Are you using two different mapped terrains by any chance?

Thanks!

Best regards,
Tim

Hi, I use a single terrain and the image mapped to it. Look for the humming bird tutorial to sort out the mapping. Basically it is as follows (Very brief) Make the image the same size as your terrain (1024*1024) make 1024*1024 terrain and reset default and then use the 'Picture' option set to 100% to import your picture exit terrain editor enter texture area and load the image (Rotating 180) Set offset to half the image size set the transparency to say around 80% and use the image set to negative (Rotated). (or use the negative image in zip file) map texture to object not world exit texture editor and then set the texture scale to 5.68 The numbers are explained in the humming bird tutorial. I think it is most likely referenced in this Groups FAQ Have fun Neil P.S. File size 2.5 meg
