Thank you to the users who were able to upload the SR3 installer experiencing CRC issues for us to troubleshoot. Weve been investigating these files and have found some changed bytes which seems to be the cause of this error. The exact root of this problem is not yet found. Some have expressed that the CRC error could be an indication of the installer archive becoming corrupt during download. Though weve tested our servers and have not found a problem as of yet, it would be helpful to get some feedback from you regarding your experience.

To help us narrow down the circumstances of this error, there are 3 questions wed like to ask of all users who downloaded SR3 and are willing to take a moment to answer.

  1. Success or Unsuccessful?
[ ] I've had no install problems at all
[ ] I had to download the installer ___ times before it worked [ ] I'm still getting the CRC error message (___ failed download[s])
  1. Client Used?
    [ ] Browser (IE Version ___, Netscape Version ___, others: ___________) [ ] Download manager (GetRight, others: ____________)
  1. ISP Details?
    [ ] Dialup
    [ ] DSL
    [ ] T1 or bigger

[ ] My ISP uses a proxy server
[ ] I have a personal firewall enabled

For the European users, the SR3 installers have now been placed and mirrored onto the Egisys (Curious Labs.de) website as well which may offer greater download success. You can find the installer at:

http://www.egisys.de/downloads/?lang=EN&res=high&path=

Thank you for your help.

Kind regards,
Katherine

  1. Success or Unsuccessful? I've had no CRC install problems at all - other than the installer's inability to recognize my P5 installs location even when it's in the same folder. 2. Client Used? Browser IE Version 6 on WinXP 3. ISP Details? DSL I have a personal firewall enabled (McAfee) After running updater (manually navigating it to look inside the same folder it was already in) Poser 5 now ID's as v5.0.2.281 Is that correct? It would help if the updaters inserted a notation of the latest SR # installed with the version number.

Suggestion: please consider ZIP- instead of EXE-format. It would be much better to provide download-files (for Windows platform) as a ZIP-archive instead of an EXE-file. One can conveniently test a ZIP-archive for being correct, even w/o having to extract it! But one never can rely on any downloaded EXE-file and always will will risk installation problems, caused by corrupted or incomplete downloads!! (My experiences) Hubert

Hubert, we're not zipping our installers because Installer Vise already applies a LZW (a.k.a ZIP) compression to the archive. So the only difference you'd have is an additional required step (unzipping) before installing, which takes longer all in all than waiting a few seconds until IV performs the automatic CRC check you want to do in a another extra step. OK?

uli_k posted Thu, 15 May 2003 at 5:08 AM

An note on proxy servers: Some ISPs route their HTTP traffic (all the web stuff...) via a proxy server, meaning that everything one subscriber downloads will be cached for a certain amount of time. Now when another subscriber requestst the file or page, it's delivered from the cache, which is great, because the user gets a faster download, and CL and the ISP save bandwidth. Problems start, when the original download to the proxy was corrupted. Then you can download the file over and over again, it'll stay corrupted until the proxy cache expires. As this matches pretty well with the user experience we've been seeing here, we wanted to get that particular information. That is only one possible explanation, though.

Hi uli, no objections if a patch runs a complete CRC-check first, before altering/installing anything else. ;) My Suggestion: would it be possible to enhance future SR-EXE installation-dialogs with a button/option to "check-file-only-w/o-installation"?? Just to launch+check it after a download or file-transfer/burn. This would be much appreciated!! As many others I usually download then burn/archive, but install only much later, mostly on a different PC. Thus I dislike to notice inconsistent, download-cropped or CRC-challenged EXE-files (esp on my archive-CDs) only during their installation. Then often having only slow/no Web-access or slow download-servers, just when I would need such a quite huge file asap again. You understand? Unfortunately, WinZIP8 cant open/check any Poser5 SR-EXE-files (I tried) and SR3-EXE does cancel itself with a complaint if Poser5 isnt installed (it isnt on my download-machine!). Sorry, cant add a result to this poll, just now. Cheers, Hubert
